Plex server thinks there are two copies of a show when there is only one

Using the latest Ubuntu version 0.9.12.16, but I did see this in earlier versions. I’ve noticed in the web interface that all newly downloaded episodes of TV shows have a little “2” in the corner, indicating that Plex thinks there are two distinct versions of the asset. However, when I do a file info in the UI, the two entries it shows have the exact same file path. For instance:

The latest episode of “Sleepy Hollow” give me this in the media info popup in the webUI:

Files

/pub/Media/Video/Television/Sleepy Hollow/Season 03/S03E04 - The Sisters Mills.mkv
/pub/Media/Video/Television/Sleepy Hollow/Season 03/S03E04 - The Sisters Mills.mkv

I only notice it for episodes added in the past week, so this may have started in version 0.9.12.13 or .14 (I think I skipped .13, so that’s why I’m not sure about that one).

A rescan of the library did not fix it, but it didn’t cause older episodes to get duplicated in the database.

Has anyone else noticed this?

I have this same problem. Haven’t been able to find a fix. It is random but happens on many different TV series.

I shared the info with Elan on twitter about the same time you initially posted this. I am seeing the problem on newly added content but the older instances seem to correct themselves.

I haven’t seen it much lately, but Grimm seems to be one series I see it more on than others. It’s not that big of a deal, so I’m not stressing about it.

Does it give you the option to to split the files? If you move the one file does it remove both entries? Have you tries Updating libraries, Optimize Database, Clean Bundles, then Empty Trash in that ordered? I’m on 0.9.12.19 but I haven’t seen this issue on any of the previous version in a long time. Also have you checked file permissions? Just some thoughts.

I am having the same problem the OP posted about except that, right now, on my server it is happening with movies.

I’ve seen this behavior infrequently for months and usually, if I move the file out of the library, do a “update library” and then empty the trash, I can move the file back in to the library and Plex is correct on the second attempt. But this time, I have about 5 movies that continually have this issue no matter what I try.

I’m seeing this, just with one of my episodes

Getting this more and more across my two servers, anyone know why?

I’m seeing this as well for the last few weeks…not all shows. If I go to the share, rename the file to something like “.OFF” Plex will remove it, then I rename it back to original name and Plex re-adds it but only as a single show…any thoughts on what is happening here?

Same here. Refreshing does nothing

I have had this issue a while ago and resolved the Problem by duplicate the offending file, Take the duplicated file and move to a different storage location. Delete the original file and refresh plex, the file should be gone now.
If so put Duplicated file back and all should good.

Just a clarification for my issue, which I think the others are seeing: There is actually only ONE file on the system. Plex indicates TWO copies, checking Info shows two files, but he directory paths are identical and point to the same file. Seeing this more and more often. I’m using a docker version of Plex with unRaid and as mentioned before this is happening randomly with some shows. Hasn’t happened with Movies for me.

As I said Above, delete offendinfd file after duplicating and saving the duplicate outside of plex storage paths. Refresh plex and it will be gone, re add and should be good.

That doesn’t always immediately work. A few times I’ve had to repeat the process multiple times before Plex stops tripping.

The steps you outlined are more than are necessary to work around the issue. There is no need to duplicate/move/delete the file. Simply rename the file to an unrecognizable format (ie: “Modern.Family.S04E20.mkv.OFF”, allow Plex to “see” the file is “gone”, then go back and rename the file back to it’s original name (“Modern.Family.S04E20.mkv”). Plex will “see” the file and add it back, but this time it will only “see” 1 copy, not 2.

I’ve followed this process multiple times with success. If you are finding this doesn’t work for your situation then apologies in advance.

Hopefully we get some news of a resolution or more insight into why this is happening. Doesn’t sound like everyone is seeing it, but there are a number of people reporting it so something is going on…

Thanks.

Yes John That will work too, it’s just a matter of vacating the string. I find right clicking easier than typing and renaming. Right click duplicate, Right click Trash, click drag and drop, click refresh, drag and drop new file. Done. Matter of a few seconds…

Thanks

I’m having this same issue and it’s preventing me from casting to Chromecast. I can play the correct version of the file using the web client, but as soon as I try to cast that version Plex complains about not finding the file. Plex also thinks I have 3 different versions of the same episode and refreshing, restarting and updating the plex server doesn’t fix that.

I just had this issue for a season of a show I was watching. Marking the entire season as watched, then marking unwatched fixed the issue. I was about halfway through the season, I just manually marked the watched episodes as such after the issue was fixed.

This is now happening every time I add a new file for some reason. Every time moving it, re scanning and putting it back fixes it but it ain’t half irritating!

Should probably clarify that it is all new episodes of TV shows and not any movies. Version 1.2.7.2987. It is preventing playback until the show is re-added correctly.
