I’m running plex on an Ubuntu server and had an issue a while back with not being able to upgrade the Plex server. I uninstalled Plex, downloaded and installed the newer version into the same default directories as the original version and everything, all the meta-data etc… was recognized and there on the new server. I think as long as you don’t delete the directories or data and allow the new version to default to the same, it will be pretty much seamless.
