hi
i erased my host ssd (macbookpro m1), where my plex server was running successfully one year, installed new osx today, a new user (with a new username, so the path changed), installed plex server app, but it wont connect to my “former” server from yesterday, all media discs are mounted. when i click on “connect to server”, in the plex menu bar, it starts a “new” server with the same name, as my old one. i dont want a new server
how can i connect to my correct server from yesterday, please?
The Plex data folder and the server’s most basic settings are stored in your Mac user account, on the OS volume.
By deleting your OS volume and setting up a completely new user account, you have thrown these data away.
But it is still associated with the other Mac user account, not the one you are using now.
Unfortunately, I cannot tell you how to rectify that as I’m no Apple user.
correct. its linked to the old username.
i copied back both the plex media server and the the pref file, from my backup
but it shows 2 servers now, one local, green flag and the “old” one is red flagged.
does anybody know how to edit the path of the server? thanks
Make sure to place the files in the home directory (~) of the Mac user who’s running your PMS. Restoring the data in the home folder of a different user will not be used by PMS.
I’ve been cautious with Time Machine backups of the Plex Media Server data directory. If the snapshot was taken with the server running, the backup might consist of a database with partial updates (e.g. while PMS is writing updates) – this can result in a corrupt database / inconsistent setup.
That being said… in your case, that’s all you got, so there’s no harm.
As for the old / local servers showing up… that’s to be expected at this point but should be resolved by a proper migration.
Basically it means, your account still remembers there used to be a different server (old) while it’s seeing the new one as active. Bringing back the preferences of the old server to your new setup should reconcile this (it might leave the then-replaced “new” server as orphaned record – we can deal with that when we get there).
thanks for your help! it worked 100% !
before, i coudnt find the correct pathes on mac osx sequoia, as you posted, fine!
as you said, the “former server” is orphaned in the list, i dont mind, just for cleaning reasons i would prefer to erase the entry, is this possible please?
