Plex server won't start since update

Server Version#:1.18.2.2015
Player Version#:

Hello. I’m a Plex pass user for several years. About a week or two the plex server running on a desktop computer with Windows 10 stopped working. I went as far as removing plex and the files in my Plex Media Server (on a second drive) and downloaded a brand new installer. The installer seems to work and fills the directory up with new files. When I start Plex server, an application can be seen in the windows Task Manager (Plex Media Server 32 bit, taking 2.7 MB and Plex Update Service 32 bit using 1.7 MB), but no icon appears on the right corner of the task bar, the server does not respond to Plex players, and the web browser interface to plex remains non functional.

I gave it a few weeks, and found that a new server download was available (1.18.2). I made sure Windows 10 was up to date (installed a few updates), then grabbed the new Plex server installer, removed the previous version of plex, and re-installed again to the second drive. Again, files appeared but plex would not start like previously. Finally, I again removed the media server and reinstalled from scratch in the default server location (C:\Program Files (x86)\Plex\Plex Media Server). Files appeared on the C drive but plex will not start. Finally, scanned my computer for viruses or malware (AVG anti virus and malwarebytes free editions), and found none.

At this point, I am ready to send a log file if people will tell me what to upload.

Thank you in advance for any help. I hope that we can figure this out because I miss my server.

Daniel

Are you trying to access the server with a web browser, running on the same machine?
Or with a Plex client on a different device in the network?

Always try with the local web browser first.

  • What happens, if you call up http://127.0.0.1:32400/web ?
  • Can you take a look into the registry, if there is a key Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Plex, Inc.\Plex Media Server\LocalAppDataPath and if it exists, which path is stored in it?
  • Get the whole folder %LOCALAPPDATA%\Plex Media Server\Logs and zip it up. Then drag the zip file into the message editor of this forum.

Thank you for the help.

I use the web browser on the same computer that server is on. http://127.0.0.1:32400/web comes up as unreachable.

The registry has LocalAppDataPath set to C:\Programs Files\Plex\Plex Media Server, which may be the problem. The installer places the Plex server into C:\Program Files (x86)\Plex\Plex Media Server
I changed LocalAppDataPath to the correct place, but it still does not seem to start up

%LOCALAPPDATA%\Plex\Plex Media Server contains a Logs folder, which looks like it was last modified on 10/26/2019 (which may be when I started having problems). I am attaching it here.

Logs.zip (24.6 KB)

  • Shut down Plex server, including the ‘Plex Update Service’
  • uninstall Plex Server using the regular Windows Apps control panel
  • download the latest beta of Plex Server and install it on drive C: (it will only occupy ~155 MB)
  • remove the key LocalAppDataPath completely from the registry

If you later want to really save space on drive C:, follow this guide: Moving Metadata on Windows - #3 by OttoKerner

Just writing to let you know that removing the key LocalAppDataPath seemed to do the trick. After that I was able to install a fresh version of Plex, which started up without any problems. I was then able to set the Plex Media Server location to the one sitting on the second hard drive, restarted my computer, and found Plex working again with my entire intact library from before.

Thank you again for your help!

Daniel
