You can’t ping plex.tv but the log files will reflect if it was found. (a common problem on Linux NAS boxes )
When you were done editing, is the owner of Preferences.xml still plex:plex
with 600 permissions ?

Yes. Here is the set of the logs.
plexmediaserverlogs.tar.gz (111.6 KB)
I believe I have network connectivity to plex.tv I was able to execute:
wget https://downloads.plex.tv/plex-media-server-new/1.18.2.2058-e67a4e892/debian/plexmediaserver_1.18.2.2058-e67a4e892_amd64.deb
I’ve tried this multiple times. Here’s the sequence of screens I am seeing. Although, on repeated attempts there is one transient notification which I could not capture which has only appeared once.
Here’s while everything is stopped and no user logged in:
After starting server and not logged presented with continue setup:
After selecting continue setup, but still not logged in, Plex shows the server libraries and icon upper right shows not logged in:
I then login and icon in upper right reflects change, thumbnails still displayed:
I then go to settings and the server inCloud is visible but showing as unclaimed
I then attempt to claim the server and for a long time see spinning circle in claim button. Also note server no longer in sidebar.
I next see this screen. In only one instance there was a transient popup indicating error while claiming server. Although, in most attempts no transient popup is displayed. In all attempts I’m left with this window.
I am still logged in
If I go to the main window, I no longer have thumbnails:
If I attempt to select a library, I see this:
Here are the logs after shutting down the server for this sequence:
plexmediaserverlogs.tar.gz (180.0 KB)
Lastly, while the guy seems to indicate the server is not claimed, the Preferences.xml is updated to include token, user, and email.
Was finally able to capture transient popup:
Note, even though it gave this error, it is updating the preferences and logging in the user. This time I attempted to claim prior to signing in. That may be why I didn’t see it all of the time. Most of the time I have signed in first and then tried to claim.
Also, to assure there are no permission problems I chown -R and chmod -R on the entire “Plex Media Server” directory tree.
As a further note, I rolled back to plexmediaserver_1.18.2.2041 with the same result. Note after pressing the “Claim Server” there is some animation where the screen repaints and for an instant shows remote access as being green but then all information about the remote server disappears.
There are two different hosts: The www.plex.tv
site (downloads) and the account management / services broker (plex.tv
).
regarding being unable to open the server’s web page:
ssh -L 8888:127.0.0.1:32400 ip.addr.of.host
http://127.0.0.1:8888/web
in an incognito browser windowI stopped Plex Media Server, made edits to Preferences.xml, restarted Plex Media Server and used an incognito browser window. The screen sequence was identical to that previously posted and here is the result:
This time I went straight to Claim Server rather than logging into the account. I was prompted to login to Plex. As you can see the window upper right reflects that it did login the user, yet Plex warning claims “…problem signing in to Plex”. How is that possible?
I am assuming the following quote was with respect to whether I had connectivity to your servers.
Doesn’t the successful signin to a user prove connectivity?
Still no success on my Linux server. Is there any possibility of this being an account issue.? The reason I ask is as an experiment I installed a clean new Plex Media Server on a different machine. Started Plex installation from scratch.
When I first started it up it gave me a similar error that is problem signing into Plex and couldn’t claim server. However, it eventually worked. Although, I did nothing. This installation was on a MacPro. Still can’t claim server on Linux.
There is an easy test for that.
Create a dummy / disposable account. I have one I use for testing weird stuff just like this.
Something else we’re learning about the new Web app. —> Reset Customizations
( Settings - Web - General )
It clears the left panel and allows you to select a new home server.
Things have gotten worse. I most recently tried using claimpms.sh, it claims success. However, from the perspective of the web app things have gotten worse. The web app is no longer seeing my server so I can’t even attempt to claim it via the web app. I have even tried claiming the server with a different plex user and have the same result. Given that I am starting Plex with a Preferences.xml which doesn’t have a user, and when I shutdown the Preferences.xml has my user name, doesn’t that imply that the server thinks it has been claimed?
Any other thoughts?
Tried rolling back to plexmediaserver_1.16.2.1321
After signing in I am dropped on this page:
I have also tried claimpms.sh and now it repeatedly gives me a 401 error. This is even after stopping Plex Media Server and deleting user and email from Preferences. xml.
Am I correct in thinking that if my plex user is not in the Preferences.xml then the Plex Media Server when started should come up as unclaimed? Just checking because the 401 error can mean that the server is already claimed.
May I have some info please?
I’m replying via PM due to content.
I’m not anywhere near as skilled as you guys. I was having the exact same problem. No soup for you etc… I’ve been at if for days trying to fix. Best I came up with was I rolled back my update to 1.16 on my QNAP and opened the app directly from there once rolled back. MEdia server has returned from oblivion. Signed in and out of my plex apps on my Android and Samsung Smart TV and now have access to my server again on all devices.
I feel like there is a fault in the new software. But again, i’m nowhere near as savvy as you guys. It’s not a fix for the new software but i’m able to access all my media again and don’t have to re-load it all. Which would be a pain as I have almost 10TB of media. Will update the software when a new version becomes available.
is there a solution to this, yet? my server worked fine and then I faced the exact same problem all of a sudden. didn’t even do any upgrades - this is a 1 day old server/ installation…
edit:
so there’s only one solution that actually works - delete (or move) your /var/lib/plexmediaserver/Library/Application\ Support/Plex\ Media\ Server
folder (or do something similar with regedit) and restart plex. you’ll have to go through the setup again and plex has to reindex everything but at least it works.

Mine started doing it again. Even after rolling back the update. I found my problem. I had the server installed on both my QNAP and my PC. After deleting the server from my PC it stopped reverting to the second server it had created. All my stuff is now accessible on my all devices again.
Same thing happened to me on my Synology server. Rolling back to 1.17 fixed the issue immediately. Plex doesn’t keep old versions available to download, had to hunt for one in the forums:
