We’re starting off 2018 with all of the improvements and fixes that make Plex more awesome.
Checked the release list and found:
FIXED:
(Apple TV 4K) Improve HDR support when connected to HDR display. (Requires Plex Media Server 1.11.0)
Remote play button correctly starts playback from TV show screens.
Managed users of Plex Pass users can access the photo timeline.
Yeah…sorry but Apple TV should be in the back seat to Windows, but it appeares they have far more employees working on that. What the he’ll is wrong with this clown running this company?
Pretty sure they go by users by platform, and I’m sure streamers hooked up to big screen TVs gets more use them htpc… But of course they should have a great PC offering, too.
I don’t know a single person that uses Plex with an Apple TV. While I know about a dozen that use Plex with Windows devices.
My Dad uses Apple devices, including multiple Apple TVs.
But it is quite possible that most people whom AppleTV targets are not knowledgeable enough about computers to set up a media server and fill it with content.
Everyone I know with Apple tv, just uses the network streaming apps (ABC, NBC, HBO, Hulu, Netflix, etc).

I certainly do! The streaming apps deliver a much, much better playback experience than Plex. In direct comparison it feels as if Plex is a student’s project.
Well it has now been confirmed what we all pretty much knew anyway. The only person on the Plex team that knew much about the windows app is no longer working for Plex.

Hi @pintoryan. I no longer work at Plex, so I’m afraid I can’t be of help.
The real question now is still have they found someone to continue or is being abandoned? My guess is the later as they hired someone to do VR that is the most limited audience I could possibly think of. Once again giving the finger to largest desktop and laptop platform.
This may be a daft question, but what’s the viability of a 3rd party PLEX app that’s truly UWP?
As far as I know, PLEX hasn’t published useful API docs but OpenPHT managed.
It’d be something I’d play with myself, but I’m not skilled in software development (I’m more of an admin/hardware guy).

Given that the Xbox app is an UWP app (as far as I know) I think we can expect the windows app to be worked on… could be wrong.

I had to reinstall my surface pro 4 from a recovery image and once installed I noticed the Plex app came preinstalled…Not a clever move given how long the app hasn’t been updated and all the issues people seem to be having with it…
So for fun I decided to email elan on his plex.tv account to see whether we could get a response on what is going on. Here is the thread:

Dear Elan,
I am writing to you as to find out what the plans are for further developing the UWP app. I don’t know if you have seen but there are quite a few angry customers on the forums and the list of bugs and missing features is growing day by day (a selection I have collated can be found here: http://forums.plex.tv/discussion/288250/list-of-bugs-in-current-uwp-app-3-2-20/p1).
I understand that PMP is available but for someone like me who uses Plex while I travel, PMP doesn’t help me as I cannot sync anything with it. The UWP app worked for some time but now has become more and more unusable. (I use my Lenovo Yoga 900 with Plex but I know that there is also a good amount of surface tablets users out there).
I am very sorry that we haven’t been able to communicate anything specific about the UWP app. We’re in the final steps of figuring out our strategy for the platform and we’ll communicate it clearly.
Off the record, we understand the need for a desktop sync solution, and we’d love to simplify our product portfolio so there’s not multiple apps for a platform where one might be enough, if it had the right set of features. The death of Windows Phone clearly had an impact as well…
Please feel free to let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I’ll try to address them as best I can.

Hey Elan,
I have to say that I’m gobsmacked to get a reply to my question and at the same time I’m not surprised. I’ve always seen Plex as a very customer orientated company and I’m really happy using your software (even with the occasional mishap) which is why I think the miscommunication has had such a big impact on the community.
I’ve seen that Dom C has started with some interaction in the forum so that may improve.
From a software development perspective I totally understand the need to simplify the product portfolio. You already support so many systems! Ideally if PMP would gain sync ability - at least for the desktop os solutions, that would be awesome and might help with the rest of the community.
I hope that the communication will improve as you yourself noted that it has not been ideal and returns to the level that we so admire of the whole Plex experience.

I don’t really know why they would kill the UWP app when it sholud share almost all (or a significant amount of code with) the Xbox app.
I expect the Xbox app to be transferred to UWP soon enough. PMP for macOS.
