I was making a Looney Tunes folder and since a series of shorts ranging 40 years doesn’t conform to standard TV seasons, i decided to make sure the folder name had the right TVDB in the swirly brackets and even a .plexmatch file with the text containing the name and tvdbid matching the TVDB number and NOTHING else to avoid complication.

i instead get all the shorts sorted in a TV series from 2009 called The Forgotten. what does it take to make the plex read it as the show i told it emphatically it was? I even made sure it was its own folder named Looney Tunes in the plex library. i tried. what does it take to make it name the show what i want, to avoid faulty sorting? I never even heard of the Forgotten and certainly do not have any of those episodes here.

Is this the show you’re talking about?

Looney Tunes on my server.

  • No plexmatch needed.
  • /tv is the folder added to the tv show library.
  • Episode ordering is TVDB (Aired).
Edit the show (pencil icon) → Advanced → Episode Ordering = TheTVDB (Aired)

Note: You may need to Plex Dance the show after any renaming / reorganization.

my library is tv shows as folder type, and the ordering is using TVDB Standard

i originally had the folder just named Looney Tunes but tried the naming suggestion used in the plex guide. and i changed the ordering to TVDB. it actually seemed to be in proper order before, sorting the seasons by years. but the episodes were in order. Just named as episodes of the Forgotten. and they still are.

and

also trying to play them from the front page of the series it gives me this. now i can play movies on this thing, as well as TV shows. so this is just not feasible as an error.

its also a lie cause when i play them in each “season” i can play them just fine.

ok that fix matching did it! the “episode 1 - 5” are replaced with titles! you really came through. hopefully you can help me with another detection issue.

I also had some trouble with documentaries being found and scanned. Like i could not get some series to appear, when the library was set to tv shows, yet several but not all episodes appear when put as a movie. though several dozen files all appear as the info for a Lou Costello movie (that i certainly do NOT have, but they wear that face in plex.) i was sure if it doesnt have a reference source that it would just post the names of the videos.

it just suck that they are both episodic in some cases and single feature length films. I have the same folder as 2 libraries, and i cant get most of them to appear. Even if all the shows appeared in shows, and the 1 offs appeared in movies. that would be fine. Ideally i would like to get them to just appear as they are, the rest of the information is nice to have but not vital.

ok the error persists even when its reading the show properly. So it seems the reason the error occurs when trying to play on the series front page, its cause when i tried to play the first episode (1929) the error persists.

now when i skip, i get taken to the 1930’s and it plays just fine.

is there a setting i need to alter to get it to play? Its a tiny file so it shouldn’t be intense.

its appeared on other files in here as well. is there a setting i can alter to tell it to just not try to convert it? or do i need to get some batch encoder and just convert all the various videos to a certain standard? cause that would be…tedious given the hundred of short. and the risk of putting out pixelated vomit

From what I see some of what you have don’t belong to the show “BBC Documentaries”

Unless they’re listed somewhere that doesn’t make sense by the date, I don’t see them

You cannot trust what comes in the file name. It may have “aired on BBC” and it may technically be a “documentary” but it may not be part of the show named “BBC Documentaries”

I don’t see anything for Pioneers of Television or the episode “superheroes” listed under that show

These are listed as their own separate show and should be in their own folders like this

Pioneers of Television (2008) {tvdb-186531}/Season 03/Superheroes s03e03.mkv

Plants Behaving Badly (2017) {tvdb-276737}/Season 01/Murder and Mayhem s01e01.mkv

Billy Connoly’s Big Send Off (2014) {tvdb-281433}/Billy Connoly’s Big Send Off s01e01.mkv

You absolutely must use the “s01e01” format and nothing else. Plex will have no idea what to do with it otherwise
Anything that says 3 of 4, 1 of 2, ect… will never work properly

Keep in mind the show BBC Documentaries is organized slightly different as far as naming goes
It has seasons and episodes listed by year
This is how it should look

I’m not sure exactly what you mean but the files are not the issue. It’s the naming and organizing

This pulls the show name and episode order directly from the TVDB. It eliminates all the guesswork and odd formats when it comes to shows like BBC Documentaries and Loony Tunes

All you have to do is find the name in the list it gives you and drop your file in

Noticed some of the Looney Tunes files are MP4 files.

Plex can read embedded metadata from MP4 files. If that metadata is bad, it will cause problems when Plex tries to match movies and shows.

Try configuring Plex not to look at embedded metadata:

  1. Edit the library → Advanced → uncheck Prefer Local Metadata.
  2. Save changes and refresh metadata.

yeah it was a catch all for the British stuff. so is there a way to make some obscure ones just appear. Like stripping them down to a bare title? like theres history channel and discovery channel and so on.

I was referring to the looney tunes that wouldn’t play in plex despite being so damn small. Apparently its cause mp4s have bad data? So i was worried about recoding them.

S1929E01 is MPEG1 video. I’ve never tried to play such in Plex, so no idea how it would handle it.

MPEG1 dates back to the early 90s and has been superseded by MPEG2 (DVD & US broadcast video), H.264 (HD Blu-ray), and H.265 (4K HDR Blu-ray & ATSC 3.0 broadcasts).

You might try running it through Handbrake or similar tools and convert it to H.264 or H.265. That should make it playable, but won’t help the picture quality.

Encode one of the files, then place it in an “other videos” library. It is a quick way to see how Plex will handle the video and how it will look onscreen. Plex will not try to match it with online databases, consider it a duplicate of your tv show library, etc.

Better yet, see if you can find a higher quality source, such as DVDs or recordings of over the air or streaming broadcasts. Notice the resolution of S1929E01 is 352x240. That is VHS tape quality. The DVDs will be 720x480 MPEG2, double the resolution of VHS quality.

i got 4 sources of looney tunes and only 2 seem to have copies going back at least to the early days. And those sources are hard to find in decent quality. I have had to resort to finding some off youtube for decent looks cause they are pixel vomit in some cases, and in others, they are dark to the point of me wondering why they even uploaded what they had, or the sound was next to mute. I really had to rely on whatever i can get. I suppose i have to just test each one and see if handbrake can straighten it out without loosing quality. or i suppose look on youtube. the download program usually goes to an MP4 standard. so as long as they have a decent copy i don’t have to encode and risk degradation.

so a question about the “others” videos would that be more forgiving with titles that are not in any global database, or named properly?

ok so…I took a youtube clip, and i ran it through microsoft clipchamp just to trim off the last few seconds (it was the uploaders logo and played with a VERY loud outro song compared to the low volume of the short. Very Jarring.) and i couldnt keep the original format, so i chose the 720P encoding. and the result will not even appear in the scan. even with refreshed metadata.

this is the properties of the file. and i copied the name from the original that DID appear in plex, so i have no idea why it won’t appear unless clip champ is just the worst encoder on the block. But handbrake wont let me trim the length.

so i ran that version through plex and added this new one…

but it still won’t appear after a rescan

update Plex Dance worked on that. But man the idea of doing that everytime i stumble on a bad mpg. I suppose that solves that.

oh i don’t think you guys answered my other question, about the “other videos” and what standards it uses? like would it be better for “less likely to be in the TVDB or MovieDB” documentaries? or would i be better off just naming each and every file with the TVDB number? Is there a recourse to the ones that won’t appear like what i can strip it down to make it appear? its a lot and i anticipate some failures and would like to have a fallback.

For Example i have something from Disney Treasures On the Front Lines, that is not in the TVDB, I have some introductions to some disney shorts (ripped off a dvd so i couldn’t tack it on at the time) but they get clumped into one episode that will not play. and they are in mpeg4 format. for that matter none of the videos will play.

and even the single ones.

BTW you guys are great at helping me face my MYRIAD problems with this program, and i appreciate it

update so… the looney tunes files that go missing when i replace them with good ones…turns out they were found. and i will remind you they are named as indicated and all within this one folder.

how does this compute?

Other Videos are not matched against anything.

It is meant for things such as personal media that will not be in IMDB, etc databases.

It can also help with troubleshooting movies/tv shows/etc. You can check if the file will be recognized (but not matched) by Plex, if it can direct play, etc.

Bad embedded metadata is often the cause of shows/episodes being misrecognized.

See my earlier post about MP4 metadata. Check the setting for “prefer local metadata” and disable it if enabled, then refresh the metadata.

i refreshed it and the forgotten is still there.

You will need to plex dance the media
