Plex still sucks at styled subtitles

I may have posted about this before, but a (lack of) an update: Plex's old transcoder still gets ugly green artifacts and quality degradation when rendering subtitles, and the New Transcoder still completely fails to render any SSA/ASS tracks. The desktop client handles subtitles quite well, but anything using the transcoder results in a miserable failure for anything with styled subs.

Wait, the desktop client handles subtitles well?

Not mine. Mine look very plain compared to what other stylized subs look like. Although to be fair, at least there's SOME support there as opposed the transcoder.

Anyway...

+1 !!!!!!!!!!!

Heh, I've never had any issues like that.

Maybe you just need to change your subtitle fonts? Might I suggest CronosPro.

Nearly all SSA/ASS subs I see have the fonts embedded in the MKV as attachments.

I recognize this as well. Many times I have issues watching subtitles One Piece episodes with Plex (OS X and iOS client) while VLC (OS X) plays/displays them fine.

would any of you mind maybe showing a screen shot of what you mean. maybe one in plex with it wrong and one in VLC they way it is supposed to be.

maybe also attach an SSA/ASS subtitle file so that the Devs can maybe take a look at it if they have time.

also this is the feature and bug voting forum. you vote for it by "liking" the first post in the thread. which only two of you have done. replying with a "+1" does absolutely nothing to get this higher up the list of the many bugs/features the devs are asked to looks at.

I alao experience this problem with green-ish colour around the text. Not possible to post a screenshot at the moment but will try and do it later on.

So, we need an option to disable sub scaling altogether (currently it's just a slider on iOS, which is nigh-impossible to get an exact 1.0 on, and I'm not sure the scale arg to the transcoder actually does anything [it looks to me like it's just scaling up by about 1.2x no matter what]), and libass probably needs to be updated.

+1 for this. One of the main reasons I switched from just using a WD Live Player back to Roku 3 + Plex was that the subtitle support on that was awful and that it couldn't handle certain formats I constantly run into with anime. This subtitle issue is one of the only problems I have with Plex.

UPDATE: There's been significant progress on this front. SSA support has been reinstated on the New Transcoder, and I've written a patch to remove green artifacts and support loading fonts from MKV attachments (great for anime), which I hope will be included in a release sometime soon.

Okay I promise I won't go through any more of your post.. Part of it was just confirming what I thought...

tl;dr Yeah this should be done.. I'll keep liking the threads for this until it actually happens..

That and ordered chapter support for anime.... the OP/EDs still don't load with MKV ordered chapters... I figure that is probably a pain to fix though

The word sucks and plex should never be used in a sentence together.
