I have Plex installed on a FreeNAS Server and the Alexa app enabled, and all was fine till a short while ago. I just used to say Alexa, play {album or song name] and it did, but now when I try it the Alexa says my Plex Server is online but needs remote access turning on, but when I log into Plex on the PC desktop web it shows remote access as on and I can access my files on Plex on the TV and on an Amazon Fire Stick, although for some reason I can only use an insecure connection and not a secure one even though everything is on the same network.
Iâve also noticed I can no longer access Plex on Firefox properly because as soon as I click to allow an insecure connection it goes into a continuous loading loop and the only way I can stop it is by deleting the history/cookies (itâs fine in Edge).
PMS? If that is Plex Media Service, then there isnât a security option I could find in the FreeNAS plug-in.
Iâve allowed insecure connections in the Plex web interface because if I donât then none of my files show up as available, but remote access still turns itself off and whne on the Alexa still says it needs turning on.
I have the usual âPreferredâ setting under Network/Secured Connections. Plex isnât working with Alexa. I say: âAlexa, Plex.â Response: "Welcome to Plex. You can say things like âSuggest something to watch, or Play Some Music.â Me: âPlay some music.â (or any other command). Consistent response over several days is, âUh-oh. Something went wrong. Iâve alerted the Plex Team so they can take a look.â
Not sure if this helps your setup, however I had a similar issue when I originally setup Plex and Alexa. Going into the Remote Access part of Plex settings would cause the green tick to come up and then after a few seconds disappear again. I finally tracked the problem down to a second router (not the broadband router) having uPnP enabled and Plex was creating the forwarding route on this router. When I disabled uPnP on this second router Plex could create the forwarding rule on the (right) broadband router and Alexa was happy and Remote Access stayed ticked.
Cheers, that could be the issue as I do use two routers, an Asus one that has all my devices connected and upnp is on, and the isp issued router that has no devices connected and wireless turned off.
Itâs working great now. Someone had the fix here. It was to disable and re-enable the Plex skill in the Alexa app, and re-link it (which happened automatically when re-enabling). Worked the first time and still working. Thanks for the response.
Sorry to dig up an old post, but I still have this problem. My server is available to stream remotely, through plex.tv login or my phone app via 4G. I also can ssh remotely into my server so I know my router is working. However, I have an Amazon Echo Show 5 that I have in my kitchen. My TV in our kids playroom as a FIRETV to stream from. My goal here is to tell Alexa to âopen plex on playroom tv and play movie titleâ
When I try, Alexa says thereâs no server found and that she will send a card to my alexa app (configuring app on my phone) but nothing ever shows up there.
I have tried reinstalling Alexa app, Resetting the show and the plex skill, and even reinstalling PMS Server (the reinstall was for a hardware upgrade, not specifically for this, but point is it still doesnt work).
Im at a loss. Alexa will work using voice commands to play something hosted by amazon, but it doesnt work with anything on my PLEX.
On your Echo just tell it âOpen Plexâ. It should identify all your Plex servers and reachable clients. If it canât find anything, there is something wrong with that device.
Thatâs not possible. Alexa cannot open apps. The Plex app must already be running the Fire TV.
Im confused. You say that all I have to do is say âAlexa Open Plexâ and if it doesnt work then something is wrong with the device. Do you mean something is wrong with the Alexa Device? If I say âAlexa, play movie title on plex (or plexmediaserver) on playroom tvâ it fails. If I tell it to play the same title without mentioning plex, it will open it in either amazon prime movies or the disney+ application with no problems if it exists there. Im confused by you saying all I need to do is say Open Plex, but then also telling me it is not possible and Alexa doesnt open apps.
Also, if I can use my voice to open the plex app but then I still have to find and search out the movie and play it using the remote? Not sure how PMS can say they work with alexa if all it can do is launch the app.
Sorry. The command âOpen Plexâ will start the Plex skill and go through a walk through of picking a primary server and client. If this procedure doesnât see your server or clients, then something might be wrong with the connection between that device and Plex. Wrong account, no remote access, canât reach your server, etc. Wonât know without further investigation, but itâs a start to see if the Echo can even talk to your server. Once this much works we can then address getting playback working.
Iâm not sure if that command works. Get the first part above working which should allow you to set the app on the fire tv as the default. You donât need to say the device name when you want to use this device.
Alexa, tell Plex to play [movie title]
If the Plex app is running on the Fire TV, it should just start playing.
Thank you very much for the further explanation. I will see what I can figure out (it might be this weekend). Iâll be sure to screenshot/document the responses I get also.
From memory, I believe the echo doesnt even find the server, but I gave up on this for a few months as I couldnt find any help anywhere even on these forums about it. Maybe a recent update fixed it.
