I would like to add the streaming services such as Hulu, Netfilx, Amazon Prime and others that should be available but when I click Streaming Services I keep getting an error message saying Something Went Wrong. Is my version of Plex not accommodating this feature? I thought it would but I could be wrong. What am I missing? What do I need to do to engage this?
As a side note, if I have a movie I bought in Amazon Prime, can I play that in Plex once I get the Prime app installed in Plex?
As per your parallel post… PMS 1.28.2.6106 is quite dated. However it shouldn’t matter all that much (I suppose) as this feature is more depending on the client/player app version.
Are you using the hosted version of Plex Web (https://app.plex.tv/desktop) or running it from the IP address of your PMS?
Some Plex clients allow “deep linking” content from your watchlist or Plex Discover. The browser version should e.g. open the Amazon Prime page of the movie. On a mobile Plex should try to open the native app/player of Amazon to stream the video from there. https://support.plex.tv/articles/discover/
I have Plex running on Synology NAS but do use Windows 10 to add music and movies, playlists and so forth. Is that what you’re wanting to know? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
As for the movies I purchased on Prime, I see that it won’t play but will if I buy from iTunes/Apple? Sure seems silly since I paid for the movies and own them theoretically. If I buy a Blu Ray of the same movie, I can burn to my computer and add to Plex. So weird the limitations they place on consumers.
If I add the apps for Netflix for example, I can play videos I have in my queue or are available from Netflix, correct?
Still confused… if you don’t run Plex on your Windows machine… how were you trying to stop PMS from your system tray or back it up from the Windows %LOCALAPPDATA% folder?
No. Same streaming provider / distributor restrictions.
While many perceive their purchase to result in “owning” the copy of a video… that’s not what you actually purchase. You purchase a license to watch something. I’m not saying I like it… but that’s the formal/contractual standpoint.
Yes – if that platform support deep-linking (see the Discover support article linked above).
I’m so sorry for any confusion I’ve caused. Again, I’m not major experienced at all this but let me try again. I have Synology running on my W10 computer which allows me to access my DS720 and add movies and music to my Synology NAS. Once I add media to Synology, I then use the Plex App which I click within Synology and it opens Plex up in a browser. I then can update my Plex (i.e. Scan Library Files). I then use Plex app on Roku device or my Apple TV device (or even the PlexAmp or Plex app on my iPhone or iPad). Does that clear it up?
I’ll check out the Discovery article you suggested. I still am unsure though as to why Streaming Services throws an error in Plex. Do you think the update of Plex software would fix that?
If I’m understanding you correctly, the link you provide takes me to my Plex program in a browser on my W10 computer. I got the error message when I go to Settings / Streaming services.
I have been away from my computer for a couple of hours so I just went into make sure I was giving you the right feedback and now Settings / Steaming services shows the huge list of streaming services. I remembered seeing that many months ago but I never added any. Now I see MAX, Netflix and others including Prime. What the heck??? I’ve done nothing different. I didn’t do any updating or work on my computer since I sent this Forum post earlier. That’s really odd. So I guess I’ll see if it will work when I get back at it tomorrow. Hopefully it won’t disappear between now and then.
Do you have any idea how this could have happened? It wouldn’t show yesterday or today and threw the error and now there’s a list of streaming services? Man, technology can be maddening sometimes.
Depending how you open the Plex Web app, you’ll end up with a different version:
The web app from https://app.plex.tv/desktop is the newest version with all the latest features and bug fixes
The web app using the IP of your Syno is the one locally stored in your server. This version is always a few releases behind… in your case it’s quite outdated because you’re running a very old version of Plex Web
Now we know the issue you had been experiencing is indeed linked to the very, very old version of Plex Web that’s tied to your server installation. You should definitely upgrade the server.
Generally it’s good practice to use the plex.tv URL to start the browser app.
When I use Plex on my computer to add movies or music for example, I always go to my Synology via a bookmark on my browser and then it opens Synology NAS. I then launch Plex from the Synology and it launches into another browser. The link is shown below (I didn’t include my real user name or number after the .me.) It may be okay to include as it’s probably standard.
Would you mind explaining a bit more about the two points you mentioned. I would greatly appreciate it, and any information you can provide that might be pertinent and helpful. Thanks so much!
So I shouldn’t launch Plex from within Synology? I’m brought to the Plex and it has everything laid out as it is when I launch Plex from Synology.
Can you explain why doing it as you suggest would be advantageous to doing it the way I usually do? Is it more secure? I’m just curious as to what the benefits are to doing it so I can better understand.
You’ll be running an up-to-date version of the web application that’s presenting your libraries, server settings and acts as a Plex player in your browser.
Also… running Plex through a synology.me address can be causing some troubles. If you need to use the bundled version, prefer using the actual IP address of the NAS instead of synology.me → e.g. http://[Syno IP address]:32400/web)
I’m not sure how to change synology.me to the actual IP of the NAS so that I can launch Plex within Synology but have it use the IP as you recommend. I know I could put that into a browser and bookmark it there (which is fine I guess) but I’d like to launch within Synology so I know the backup is correct for when I do that. I know what the IP is as it’s a static IP but just not sure how to change it on Plex app within Synology.
Would you be able to show me how to do that? I’m so sorry for not being more experienced with these things.
I don’t think you can change the URL used when opening the link to the web app from the DSM page. I know Syno will show the actual IP if you haven’t enabled QuickConnect or Dynamic DNS in your DSM settings…
If you don’t need those to remotely access your NAS / DSM, you could disable them. For anything else just save yourself a lot of effort and bookmark the local or hosted version of the Plex web app… there’s nothing to gain by double clicking the Plex icon on the DSM „desktop“ vs. opening the bookmark.
I went to Settings in Plex and then the Streaming Services and once again, it’s throwing the error “something went wrong.” This is what was happening and why I created this forum to see what the problem was. Note: I have not yet updated the Plex software so that could be it as you denote. But odd that it came back where I could see all the streaming options I could add but now it’s gone again. Hmmm.
My last reply today said the streaming services wasn’t showing up again. I still had the app.plex.tv/desktop browser open and just happened to look there and Streaming services shows up. Again, why would they show there but not when I launch Plex out of Synology (where it uses my username.synology.me link I sent yesterday?
I’m sorry to ask again. I’ve not updated Plex software yet so maybe that will make it work from Synology/Plex but if not, then at least I know where to see it.
It does make me ask the question as to whether I would see any of these streaming apps using Synology/Plex if I add them from the app.plex.tv/desktop first? It seems like it would but I’ve not added any yet.
I greatly appreciate your patience helping me here. Thanks!
There can be a number of reasons… could be some bug in the old (local) version itself or an incompatibility because Plex have changed something about the streaming services which isn’t supported by your old version.
As an equivalent: consider your Plex web app to be a built-in navigation system in your car… if you never update anything about it, it’ll still work but at some point you’ll start noticing that it’s missing some changes (e.g. new addresses, rerouted streets/bridges, free roads turned into toll roads…).
The hosted version is the navigation on your smartphone that’s always using up-to-date maps etc.
Good analogy. Thank you so much. I’ll update Plex this weekend. I sure pray the Playlists tab is still there for music and movies. Can you confirm on your version if you’re on the newest version?
In the past, I would update Plex in Synology by downloading the Plex file from the Synology website so I have the updated version there. Then I would update it in the Plex program.
I would assume that the update would then be the same whether I launch from Synology or the http://app.plex.tv/desktop, correct?
