today I wanted to play movie “Countdown (2019)” with subtitles.
I had a problems with slovak diacritics letters like š č ť etc.
Ie word “kočky” shows me as “koky”.
I tried to play movie in VLC, worked perfect.
Can you tell me what is bad? For future movies I will play…

It could be the font chosen by the text renderer doesn’t have those specific letters/type-faces. This isn’t a problem on your end but would maybe be a problem on Plex’s end.
What you could try is getting aegisub, put the subtitles in there, select a font that has those characters that is also on your machine, and then save the subs as a .ass/.ssa file. Don’t do this for all movies straight away, test it, as some clients don’t like .ssa/.ass files (all of mine are fine but others have had issues). If it works without transcoding, go ahead and do it for all of your movies at that point.
The file is using Windows ANSI text encoding. Convert that to UTF-8 to be compatible to all kinds of Plex clients. Not only those running Windows.
Try this version. I simply opened it in Subtitle Edit and changed the encoding.

@OttoKerner I tried it, same result. Maybe I must run analyze in plex or something?
Which Plex client are we talking about?

If the video file has a subtitle track embedded in the file, I think Plex will automatically select that version. It would also remember the last version you selected (the ANSI version) if that file is still available. You would have to manually select the new version encoded in UTF-8.
Subtitles encoded in UTF-8 work every time on every client for me, so it’s an unusual problem.

I’ve just installed Plex ( Debian 4.19.67, Plex 1.18.5.2309) having exactly the same issue.
UTF8 subtitles or those downloaded from opensubtitles.org in Czech language. Letters with diacritics are not shown :
Word “rybník” is displayed as “rybnk” etc. Playing in web client.
Then try my srt2utf-8 solution as I suggested
Hi dane22, thanks you for your response. Subtitles from opensubtitles.org are already in UTF-8. Please can you clarify how exactly this plugin can help me? I believe the problem you described in Romanian subtitles thread is a little different. I want to be able to use opensubtitles.org as a source for subtitles. I believe there is a bug in Plex Media server that needs to be fixed anyway.
Have you verified, and if so, then subs are simply bad!
