This is the same issue i’m having with it and untill it’s fixed i’m using OpenPHT (the open source Plex Home Theater client). Hopefully they wont release any update that will kill OpenPHT.
I’m actually cheking from time to time to see if they fixed it, but so far no luck (this issue is here from the launch of this Plex Client).
There seems to be a problem with client localization and only on Windows, i’m using the plex app on Mac os and Android too without this issue.
My subtitles are named correctly <movie_name>.ro.srt but the windows client playes them without the right encoding.
ok, but that means I must convert 800+ subtitles
only on desktop player I have this issue; on web browser, without any conversions, is working fine. I changed also regional settings on my computer, without luck. as drakaar says , my subtitles are correctly named <movie_name>.ro.srt
Here’s one subtitle, but changing to UTF-8 will brake it (unfotunately i wasn’t able to be online or i would have prevent ierdnA88 about it - yes i tried it in the past).
Yes it look’s correctly, those weird characters should be the special characters that are not displayed correctly by the player due to not getting the right formatting from it.
The player should convert them like this: þ to ț, º to ș, ª to Ș and so on if the subtitle is named as <movie_name>.ro.srt.
I have no problem playing that subtitle with the Mac Os, Android, Plex App on Samsung TV or OpenPHT (on Windows), the problem appears only on PMP on Windows.
Finally, after some searching on google, I found a solution for my problem. I installed and activated a plugin called srt2utf8. I moved the plugin above of the rest on all 3 tabs:
You might end up having problems, when adding new movies, and use either local subs, or subs from OpenSubtitles, if not having it at the buttom
Edit: Explanation as follows:
When a new media is detected, the agents will run in the order you specified, from top towards bottom.
If SRT2UTF-8 is on top, then there’s no subs detected yet, and as such, it can’t do what it’s supposed to do!
In your case, you where refreshing medias, that already had subs detected, and as such worked, but your current conf. will fail for new medias, so please move it to the bottom!
And FYI: I wrote SRT2UTF-8, so kinda knows how it works
Ok, after thinkering with my brother on Windows we found a fix that wont require any plugin installed on Plex and i can confirm it working.
I’m running Windows 10 with latest update installed and the setting is located in Control Pannel -> Region -> Administrative -> Change System Locale -> Enable the Beta: Use Unicode UTF-8 for worldwide language support.
After enable you will have to Reboot the computer (if after saving won’t request a reboot).
