So I am not sure where to post this. I struggled to get subtitles for episode 3 of Deutschland 83. I had to upload them by hand as the ones Plex was finding did not work.
I always assumed that if I set the subtitles on my home system, that users outside would get those subtiltes. That does not seem to be the case? They are getting the same bad ones I got via Plex and they are not used to searching and finding stuff like this.
Is there a way to set the subtitles on the server side so all users get the right ones? Thanks!
As long as your shared users have their language preferences set correctly.
Did I understand correctly that this show is aired with German audio throughout?
If that is the case, then you need to
name your external subtitle with exactly the same file name as the video file – but add in .eng just before the file name extension. This is to indicate that the subtitle file contains English text.
set the language preferences of your Plex account thusly:
Automatically select audio and subtitle tracks
PREFERRED AUDIO LANGUAGE = English
PREFERRED SUBTITLE LANGUAGE = English
AUTO-SELECT SUBTITLE MODE = Shown with foreign audio
The video file must have proper metadata, which indicate to Plex, that the audio stream is in fact German
