Default subtitles when using another user's server

On my own Plex server, I have the language settings set to default to Japanese language with English subtitles. When watching media on my own server, this works as expected. A friend has also granted me access to his Plex server, but when I watch media on his server, the subtitles don’t show up by default. The subtitles are correctly set to English.

Does that setting only apply to media on my server? Is there a setting I can change so I automatically get the correct default subtitles for myself on my friend’s server? If not, is there anything my friend can set on his server for me, without impacting himself or his other users?

That’s what I already have set. It doesn’t work for media I watch from my friend’s server.

Are your friends server updated?

Ah, I did see that, but I wasn’t sure if it was related. I’ll ask him to update his server if it’s not already updated.
