I have a Samsung QE55Q7FN TV and at the moment I installed my Plex Server (v 4.34.3) on a Synology DS1019+. Before the Plex server was installed on a Windows 10 client with the same problems.
All my movies and tv shows are mkv files. I ripped movies by MakeMkv and Handbrake. Same result.
When I watch a movie and I selected NO subtitle, it works perfect. The movie start
immediately and I can jump form one chapter to an other chapter, I can use fast forward and backward in the movie and all happen in real time.
But when I select a subtitle and then start the movie, its take already few seconds till the movie start. When the movie is running and I want to jump to an other chapter, its takes again 10-20 seconds. Same behavior by fast forward and backward too.
I hope somebody can help me here to fix this problem.
Go to Subscene or Opensubtitles website and download a version of the subtitles in SRT format.
Or get Subtitles Edit and convert them yourself from the original VOBSUB or PGS format.
For now, just try it out, regardless of the quality.
I for one prefer to convert the original subtitles, using Subtitle Edit
That way, the timing is perfect.
Of course, there will always be some subtitles which are difficult for the OCR process to recognise correctly. For these, I let the OCR process run through but ignore the mistakes.
I then download a subtitle from one of the above mentioned sources and then use a feature of Subtitle Edit named “Point Sync via other subtitle”. It allows me to apply the timing information of my converted subs to the file with the downloaded subs.
Both approaches are possible and each has its pros and cons.
To “mux” in the subtitles I use MKVtoolnixGUI. If you have more subtitles than the usual “full” and “forced”, I recommend this one, becaused you can add descriptive names to each subtitle track.
You’re right. If I download an SRT file, the timestamps are not correctly.
I tried your approach with this Point Sync feature. Unfortunately both SRT files has not same amount of entries. My SRT file has 1080 and the downloaded SRT file has 970.
In this feature, it seems like that I have to click and correct each entry individually. Is this correctly?
This might be due to the two subs being a “SDH” and a “full” edition.
(SDH = “subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing”
Subtitle Edit can try and remove those parts of SDH subs, which contain descriptions of sounds and music, or speaker names. Thus, turning “SDH” subs into “full” subs.)
No, you just seek one identical sentence around the beginning of the files and one at the end and mark these pairs as the sync points. It is theoretically possible to use more than 2 pairs. But usually the sync quality won’t improve much, unless the two subtitle files are from different “cuts” of the movie.
In most cases it can, because the parts are either (written in between brackets),
or speaker names are followed by a colon:
VOBSUB and PGS subtitles are “image” formats. They are usually only supported in DVD/Blu-ray players.
Converting them into text has an added benefit: you can change the color, size and style of them while they are shown.
e.g. For a small phone screen you want them larger, or maybe tint them yellow.
