Plex Suddenly Stops Hardware Transcoding

1.32.2.7100 eta? tonight? :smiley: maybe?

I was just about to grab debugging from 1.32.2.7088 because the P2000 is skipping some hw transcodes again like the 1.32.2.7002. Do you want any more debug logs on it?

Tested on:

  1. KabyLake Ubuntu (QSV)
  2. RaptorLake Ubuntu (QSV & Nvidia 3040)
  3. Xeon + Ubuntu (Nvidia P2200)

Happy to test and report but I’d need the rpm. I can wait for the plexpass update. I’ll auto-update when it appears.

It seems 1.32.2.7100-248a2daf0 HW transcoding is back to work again even with HDR tone mapping.
Running Unraid system with i7 3770, 16gb ram and Nvidia 1050ti 4gb.

Here you have the new logs if you need it for any reason.
Thanks for the work.

Looking good!

OS: RHEL8.8
Plex: 1.32.2.7100-248a2daf0
nVidia: 530.30.02

Just want to corroborate the above two responses that this update (1.32.2.7100-248a2daf0) solved the hardware transcoding issues I have been having the last couple of days. Thank you for the constant updates and quick fixes @ChuckPa.

WOW

The responses here are amazing!!
Going to try out a few of the versions recommended here and see how I go.

Really amazing to see the team working so hard on fixing the solution!

Just ran a test on a fresh install straight on my debian instance (so not through docker)

Same issues as previously. Works great for about the first half hour and then suddenly stops.

This is the log as I was transcoding and it suddenly stopped.

@KillerKaac

The problem is the AppleTV and not the server.

  1. There are bandwidth limitations set – reevaluate
  2. When is the last the app was updated ?
  3. When’s the last it was just uninstalled and reinstalled ?
  4. Is the ATV fully up to date on software (tvOS has had a LOT of bugs)

Lastly, Play the same file on a different player to confim.

Appreciate the really fast replies!!

  1. Everything is set to unlimited and no limitations are set
  2. App is on the latest version - I just updated it.
  3. I will try this now - however I dont seem to think its a problem with tvOS as im having identical problems on a Google TV, as well as just using the Plex app on my computer. Strange how it seems to work perfectly fine for about 30 minutes after rebooting my server
  4. Everything is up to date

I have attached the logs from running the same test on my Google TV where the same issue is happening.

Plex Media Server Logs_2023-05-19_13-57-13.zip (3.3 MB)

FWIW I noticed a user on one of the Roku streaming sticks was transcoding from 4k to 720p last night.

I called and asked them to update quality settings, but they said (and I confirmed over video) that all quality was set to original.

I assumed the issue was related to the one in this thread, so I didn’t report anything (plus I couldn’t isolate the logs and that user had gone to sleep).

I’ll try testing with the new version tomorrow.

@KillerKaac

  1. The limit is set to 20 Mpbs ( 20000 Kbps)

provided by client to fit bandwidth limit of 20000kbps

  1. While there should be enough space here for one, are there multiple transcodes of high resolution files?

I think we’re going to need to chip away at this. There is no glaring problem; just a bunch of little ones.

720p is usually a function of:

  1. The TV itself
  2. Any additional restrictions on the playback.

(Roku’s have a 720p mode – Better check that – switch to 1080p or 2160p )

  1. I cant seem to see anything restricting my internet on my PMS like that, I’ve attached screenshots below. On the client side it is also the same, everything is set to maximum

  1. I’ve only been transcoding 1 file at a time for testing, I’ve allocated a 100gb VM to this share inside of proxmox so I feel that should be more than enough!

  2. Just turned off IPV6, thank you for that.

Ill reboot and post the logs if/when it happens again!

Meaning in the Roku settings and not in the Plex settings?

Also completely subjective, but I asked the user if it looked like 4k and they said yes.

Yes.

The Roku itself defaults to 720p display mode.
When you set it up, you have to set it for the resolution of the TV

@KillerKaac

Turn off “use recommended”. At home, on LAN, you want full quality, right?

Same situation as before - works for about half an hour and then transcoding stops
New logs attached.
Removed IPV6, ensured theres no client limit

Is the player on WiFi?

The player is disconnecting.
PMS closes because the player stopped asking for data.

DHCP on the player ? (if so, make it a static IP)

Network problems are a pain to diagnose.

Is the Server wired and static IP or Wifi? (server should always be wired)

@eygraber

This is a Roku 4800X (DoVi support).

Had I not used proper cabling, it would have dropped to 720p.
