Plex System Configuration Help Needed

Newbie Plex user…I have a variety of options how to use Plex and would like some assistance figuring out the best way to use Plex.

I have a Qnap TS-653D with 6X14TB which is on my Ethernet. My main components are a Onkyo AV receiver that hubs the other components. Have a Samsung Smart TV, a Fire Cube, Roku Ultra, and the Shield TV.

I am assuming it is best to keep the Plex Server on the Qnap and then use one of the devices as a client? Is the Shield best in that role? I am guessing the Shield features exceed the Fire and Roku?

Prior to this I had a Minix running Kodi and I am attempting to come up with a better solution.

Thanks

Yes, the Qnap will be what you want the server on. You can install a server on the Shield but I wouldn’t recommend it to someone with that NAS

You can look up your model on this chart to get an idea of what it can do. You have the Plex pass so you’ll be interested in the hardware accelerated transcoding

My list would go…

  1. Shield Pro

  2. Fire TV or Shield tube

  3. Roku

  4. Smart TV

The Shield Pro is generally considered the best one of that bunch as far as players. It seems to be the most versatile especially with audio. Probably a good choice for the TV with the receiver.

I’ve used several Fire TV’s and for the most part they’re not bad at all

The Roku I’ve tested but never used as a daily driver and never used a Smart TV app

With make, model and year…even among the same manufacturer you can a lot of problems or none
You’ll have to try it

If you get hung up on anything during install or setup just create a post here in the forum

Thank you sir. I have been primarily been watching content on the Fire, but want to start viewing my digitized content instead so I hope I can get the Shield configured right. I think I tried it once and it was trying to be the server. I need to figure out how to make it a client.

If I was trying to confuse someone on purpose, I would set it up exactly how they have it

“You have a Plex Media server on this device”. How does it know that if I hadn’t installed it yet? The message implies that it’s recognizing your existing server on the network.

Then you get a default checkmark in the box to create a new server that you have to disable. The language doesn’t make it very clear as to whether you’re creating a new server or trying connect to an existing one

You can disable the server in the settings and just use it as a player if you already did this by accident
