QNAP NAS server and nVidia Shield Server for live TV

I am trying to run a QNAP based Plex server (for remote sharing with friends) but use an Nvidia Shield server (with a Hauppauge TV tuner). I have Plex pass and will get a second pass to get this to work if required. Love the system and am willing to help fund it.

I want to know if this will work?

All of the data resides on the NAS with a PLEX server running on the NAS. I share access with a few people and want to keep it working from that system.

For my personal viewing, I would like to set up an NVidia shield-based server with the TV tuner for live TV and still access the data files from my NAS. I know I need to have PLEX pass for the Live TV functionality.

Will this work?

First, post so sorry if I am not following the right procedures.

Cheers

If you already have a server on your QNAP, why not just use the Shield as a client?

I do that, and have Live TV working nicely here

Dane22,

Currently, I am using the Shield as a client on my system and it is working great for my video and audio libraries. I have not been able to see the TV tuner on the shield (proper model for Australia from Hauppauge (1590) with the Plex logo on the side).

I would love to do that! Don’t you need to be using a Plex server on the Shield (not the client) to use a USB tv tuner on the Shield?

My goal is to have 100% of my system running through PLEX.

Again no problem paying for a second Plex Pass if it would work. I would use a different email address for all registrations and apps on the Shield. I have a free 3-month pass that came with the USB TV tuner so I could try that. Just trying to find out if anyone has failed so I don’t have to myself.

Thanks

Ahh…That sadly looks like it’s not working with a QNAP

I’ve got a LAN based one ( HD Homerun ) that works with all platforms
Regarding using an USB Tuner on a shield, I got the stick version of the Shield, so no way for me to connect an usb based tuner

Since you already have a Plex pass, there’s no need to buy another.

In short, I sadly suspect you got the wrong tuner for your PMS platform, sorry

Dane22,

Looking at purchasing the HD Homerun as I type.

I think this will work. I have boxes of good ideas that didn’t do exactly what I thought they would do, Ohh well it is only money.

If I have the HD Homerun will it work on a Plex client or am I back to my original issue it has to be on a device operating at the server?

I appreciate your help, I see you are a Plex employee, where can I send a thumbs up to your boss. I went from Kodi to Plex and fell in love with the system. I have dozens of people using it since they have seen my system.

Thanks Again

Rvmandel

If you have a network attached HDHomerun, simply set it up in the PMS WebClient, and it should be avail to all Plex Clients supporting it.

This would likely be cheaper and less headache than trying to run a second server/tuner from a different device.

I run two networked HDHomeruns and a QNAP and everything runs great!

AmazingRando24,

Any recommendations of a Network TV Tuner (like the HD Homeruns)? It looks as if Silicondust stopped production at least for the Australian market. Hauppauge has nothing right now either. I am looking at used if I can get my hands on one.

Thanks Roger

I do not have knowledge of the different solutions, nor am I in a position to recommend one over the other

Sadly all I can say is that I have an HD Homerun myself, and it’s working nicely

I use two older HDHomerun Extends which run at 1080. They do some degree of pre-transcoding before sending out the feed. I am looking to swap out to the single unit HDHomerun Flex Duo for 4k, but from what I understand there’s still some issues with ATSC 3.0 and Plex. I’ll likely wait for that to get sorted before I swap out.
