I just found that Plex wasn’t recording two scheduled shows simultaneously. One show was recording fine, and the second show was not being recorded. When I tried to watch the show, Plex told me both tuners were in use, and asked if I wanted to cancel recording show 1, or stop watching the show on tuner 2. I checked my HDHomeRun, and only one tuner 0 was in use, for show 1. Tuner 1 was not in use. I looked at the HDHR log, and the last time Tuner 1 was used was when I tested channel 17.4 late last night via the Plex web application:
20180218-05:02:58 Tuner: tuner1 tuning 17.4 Comet (8vsb:491MHz-6)
20180218-05:02:58 Tuner: tuner1 streaming http to 192.168.1.5:51174
20180218-05:06:45 Tuner: tuner1 http stream ended (remote closed)
Unfortunately, I can’t find any reference to the phantom activity on tuner 1 in the server logs. They’ve already rotated through all 5 backup logs since this problem occurred.
HDHR tuner log for the second show:
20180219-00:12:38 Tuner: tuner1 tuning 3.1 KYW-TV (8vsb:545MHz-1)
20180219-00:12:38 Tuner: tuner1 streaming http to 192.168.1.5:39663
20180219-01:03:04 Tuner: tuner1 http stream ended (remote closed)
NOTE: After this show ended, Plex did not start recording another show scheduled to start at the top of the hour. When I’ve tried to watch it manually, Plex displayed the “Tuning Channel” message, timed out, and then displayed “An error has occurred, please try again later”.
Tuner 1 is not in use at this time. Here is a snippet from the Plex Media Server log, which indicates that Plex thinks it’s doing something here:

Here is the termination of the recording of show 1:

Feb 18, 2018 20:00:00.552 [0x7f28cb7fa700] DEBUG - DVR:Grabber: Operation was active, stopping recorder.
And here is Plex attempting to start recording the new show.
Feb 18, 2018 20:00:00.724 [0x7f28d53ff700] DEBUG - DVR:Grabber: HDHomerun starting a media grab on device device://tv.plex.grabbers.hdhomerun/1061BEE8 (Silicondust HDHomeRun CONNECT Duo, supported) tuner 1.
I decided to try watching another show on a third channel, just to see what Plex would do. It displayed a dialog with the following options:
- Stop recording 2018 Winter Olympics and continue
- Cancel 2018 Winter Olympics and continue
- Stop watching The Simpsons and continue
- Stop recording The Simpsons and continue
- Cancel The Simpsons and continue
After selecting “stop watching”, “stop recording”, and “cancel” for the Simpsons, I still could not get Plex to tune to a new channel-it displayd “An error has occurred, please try again”, again! As a matter of fact, when I backed out of the third channel, and went back to the Simpsons, the following options were presented:
- Stop recording 2018 Winter Olympics and continue
- Cancel 2018 Winter Olympics and continue
- Stop watching The Munsters and continue
Restarting the server seems to have cleared this up temporarily.
