Plex transcoder run my cpu over 90%

Server Version#: lastest
Player Version#:
hi, my cpu run over 90%(while 5 seconds-10 seconds and then down to normal) when i start a video in the pc or when i change the moment of the video (sorry my bad english i try explain the best way) for example: a change the minute 1:18 for 20:32.
i have a i7 8700k. never happend before this. i dont know if is a bug that the new version or i have change something. i need help please and sorry again for my bad english.

This is completely normal.
At playback start, Plex will transcode as fast as it can to create a buffer of transcoded data. When this buffer is filled up, it will throttle the transcoder.

But this never happened before…( the file plex transcoder run my cpu over 90%)

Maybe you never played files before which require the cpu to work harder. e.g. videos with HEVC video and higher bitrate and/or high quality audio like e.g. “TrueHD with Atmos”

No, i try with all… old files, new files, quality files, low quality. Always happened the same.
It cannot be normal because I have tried it on another computer with worse components and it does not happen

This only happens when transcoding is required. Maybe you changed something in the client configuration, so that now transcoding is required, whereas before the file would Direct Play?
Possible candidates would be:

  • server upload bandwidth restriction
  • enabling subtitles (particularly PGS and VOBSUB)
  • client-side bandwidth restrictions
  • disabling ‘Direct Stream’ and/or ‘Direct Play’ in the client’s preferences
  • the server no longer being accessible directly. watch out for warnings about ‘indirect connection’. Possible causes could be changes in your router (firmware update, settings modification). Much more so, when trying to use a custom domain name for your server.

Still, when transcoding is active, the CPU spiking at the beginning of playback is normal.

Check the status of your CPU fan/heatsink. I had this issue and noticed the fan and heatsink were becoming detached from the CPU. You may need to apply new thermal paste to the CPU.
