Plex does not use 100 % cpu?

Server Version#: 1.13.9.5456

Hey all.
Sometimes when i go to the gym i want to play a 720p (2 Mbps) on my phone (with 4G) ( i get about 100 mbit with a speedtest)
I have a 100 mbit internet connection and my server running 1 Ggps to my router.

But i can see when the file is beeing transcoded it only uses 45 % of my cpu? (23 % mem)

I have set the setting to “let my CPU Sweat”

Can you tell me if i have done somthing wroung?

Thanks
Regards Daniel

Are you using subtitles?
Is the playback fluid?

Hey @OttoKerner.

no subtitles
Im sorry but i dont understand “fluid”
After the series starts it plays fine.
I have attached the XML file.

Thanks

XML.txt (2.5 KB)

Is your complaint that the playback is choppy or stuttering
or
that you want Plex to always use 100% (and why should it)?

Hi Otto.
I just think that it takes very long to transcode. So just want plex to use 100 % when transcoding so it speeds up

Why should it speed up? Are you watching the video at 2 or 3 times as fast as normal?

Hi Otto.

I mean speed up the “transcode” process

Yes, I know. But why? You can’t watch the video faster than in real time.

see https://support.plex.tv/articles/203064726-if-a-transcode-is-throttled-is-that-bad/

@Danielpt

plex does not pre-transcode the whole file before streaming.

it only transcodes a small buffer of time before streaming it out to your client.

I imagine it does this, because it is more efficient when streaming to multiple clients at the same time.

IE do stream1 buffer, then stream2 buffer, stream3 buffer, back to stream1 buffer, and so on .

I think you are misunderstanding me

I think that the “loading” “spinning” is taking to long. And i think it is becurse that Plex dosent use all my cpu power.

Regards Daniel

probably more a problem with your phone or phone connection.

but since you haven’t really given any details on your plex server, cpu model/speed, how much ram, where your files are located (on the same server or on a network share) etc.

just because the cpu isn’t 100%, doesn’t indicate a problem.

in fact, if your cpu was 100% all the time, then your server probably isn’t powerful enough.

Sorry

CPU: Core i5 6400T 2,2 Ghz
16 Gb ram
All files stored on the same server (WD RED 8TB)

I just takes 30-60 seconds before it plays the file.

Hm, the CPU is no race horse,
https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i5-6400T+%40+2.20GHz&id=2668
but should be able to transcode this type of file pretty quickly.

Do you have only this one hard disk in the server?
Or, if you have several hard drives in it, is the windows system installed on a separate drive?

Did you relocate the Plex data folder to a different drive and is this drive externally connected (per USB or such)?

Hi Otto. Thanks for the reply.

No i know
No i have 2 other disks.

The Windows installation is on a SSD disk. Plex installations is also on my SSD.

How much free space is left on the SSD?

Have you checked cpu temperatures lately, while transcoding is going on?
cpu coolers tend to get clogged by dust and fluff, particularly if the computer case is small and the fan is also small and therefore has high RPM’s. The cpu might overheat when used heavily and thus may throttle itself to prevent further overheating.

Hi Otto.

very good point!

But i dont think thats is the problem.

Look at my screenshot.

Yes, it doesn’t appear as if it’s overheating.
But the clock rates are also far below the spec’d 2.2 GHz

But i cant see that it uses “HW” so i dosent use that mutch CPU
