The new Google TV Streamer doesn’t support TrueHD bitstreaming, but it can decode on device to PCM and output that to a receiver or tv. I’ve tested this through VLC and a Dolby True HD test tone file. When playing a file with TrueHD audio through Plex, it says True HD isn’t supported and transcodes to Opus. I’d rather have it just Direct Play the audio to the TV Streamer and have the device convert it to PCM.
Did you use passtrough in Plex setup?
Have you try audio set to manuell and activate True HD and DTS:X?
Do you have a compatible soundbar or av receiver?
With passthrough enabled, the video just infinitely loads and doesn’t start playing. Audio is set to automatic, which enables TrueHD. I’ve tested it both hooked up through a receiver and directly into a tv.
Just to verify, we now know for fact the Google TV Streamer does not do TrueHD pass through? Disappointing (even if PCM conversion is basically the same)
Thanks for this. Saving myself $100 and will stick with the old model on our not amazing TV in the living room and will keep using my Kodi w/ Plex plug in device on my main TV.
Now, is this something that Plex or Google can fix or should Plex remove the passthrough in the settings since it’s not possible at all and needs to be disabled?
Another way is waiting for the Google TV Streamer Pro.
I was wrong in my assumptions about TrueHD decoding. The device has no TrueHD support whatsoever, VLC and Kodi are using their built-in decoders to handle TrueHD and that’s what I was seeing/hearing.
For some reason, there are TrueHD and DTS-HD toggles in the Android settings menu, but this is a bug. I’ve been in contact with Google and they said these will be removed in a future update.
