Plex transcoding when it doesn’t need to?

Hi,

I seem to be having an issue where plex is transcoding VC1 encoded .Mkv to a LG G1 when it doesn’t need to

If I change the plex audio setting to enable DTS it then direct plays both the video and the audio stream, albeit with no sound because the tv does not support DTS. However the image is fine

If the tv is perfectly capable of playing VC1, why does it transcode to H264 when I turn off the DTS option?

Is there a way to stop the transcode?

If you start to transcode the audio track, Plex needs to transcode the video as well in order to maintain audio/video synchronicity.

Why? Or rather: Under what conditions?

I’m sure that I watched something with audio transcode and direct stream video on my LG C9 before. So it doesn’t do it always.

I don’t know the exact rules. It might be dependent on several things, actually:

  • the type of video codec
  • the type audio codec
  • whether subtitles are activated
  • whether the selected audio stream is the first audio stream in the file or not
  • some combination(s) of the above
