Plex Transcoding with no connected users or session

Server Version#: Version 1.30.2.6563
Player Version#:

I’m running TrueNAS SCALE and migrated my Plex instance from a Windows desktop to a new container on the NAS. Since installing PMS, I routinely see a single transcoding session that uses 100% CPU on my NAS, chewing up a full core. I have no users connected, no sessions, but the thread is there. If I shutdown the container, it drops away. After restarting the container, the transcoding session dies, and resume shortly after restart. I see this in the logs:

It seems like this is the sonic album analysis, so is my only option to stop that feature?

Seems likely it is Sonic Analysis. Can you call up a process viewer and look for a transcoder entry while this is going on? The transcoder process command line should list the exact file it is chewing on.

Maybe it’s a bad file you can replace. (Seen that.) Maybe it’s a good file that the transcoder should be able to handle, or at least skip without dying. Posting those details will help Plex fix it.

Sure enough, I can see it’s working on a particular .mkv file. I’m re-downloading to see if this file, to see if that corrects the issue. I’ll post details later. Thanks very much for getting me pointed in the right direction!

If it’s an MKV I guess it isn’t Sonic Analysis, but the transcoder is used for some other maintenance tasks. If you can figure out what about the file chokes the transcoder, let us know. Good luck!

I re-downloaded the files again. When I attempt to even play them, Plex chokes on playback as well.

mediainfo.txt (7.6 KB)

It seems like the container is intact, and the codecs aren’t too weird, but Plex clearly dislikes it. I will probably re-rip the source media with different parameters and see what that gives me.

Re-rip is probably the best idea, yep.

Numerous attempts to re-rip the file at Hi-10P with my preferred settings results in an mkv file that causes Plex to just chew forever. I’ve dumped those settings and it seems to alleviate the issue. Marking this closed. Thanks!

There’s probably something interesting going on in there for ffmpeg nerds, but at least you got it working.

I haven’t been following this thread too closely, but I’m curious, if you are ripping this file yourself, why are you choosing a codec that is supported for direct play on so few Plex clients? I would suggest using HEVC for a fresh encode.

Because I don’t choose my codecs for Plex playback.
I pick Hi10P for some of my content, because I prefer the adjustments to the black levels. HEVC hasn’t always produced good results for me on some content, so I make some compromises. Finally, my Plex rig transcodes pretty nicely, so I don’t mind transcoding some content.

Thanks!
