Plex update failed

Plex has become unresponsive after scanning a library for 18 hours, culminating in the message “Something went wrong / An unexpected error occurred.”. Attempting to install an update appears to succeed, but it isn’t clear that the running instance was ever terminated successfully. Here are the final lines of Plex Media Server.log:

First, snippets of server logs aren’t going to do any of us that can read them any good. We need the full logs to do any kind of real troubleshooting.

Second anyone who attempts to troubleshoot this really should have all of the relevant information as to what was going on when this issue occurred that is detailed in your feature request.

Third, treating people the way you did in your other post and then running off to start another post where you purposely leave out the relevant information is not going to make you very many friends around here.

Hi Bikbyrd,

I tried to post the full log. You may be unaware that this forum software has a limit, and it refused to accept a log that consists of 2,048,951 characters. I still have it, if you can provide a way for me to send it to you.

I apologize profusely for any mistreatment of others. That certainly wasn’t my intent, but how many times can a person say “I do not wish to rearrange my files” before becoming frustrated? I now believe I should’ve simply ignored the responses telling me how to do so. I have removed two posts that may have offended others. Perhaps you can explain to me exactly what I said that offended you and others, and I promise to change or remove them as well.

I feel like the users here are very defensive when anyone suggests that Plex should be more flexible when it comes to how a user’s files are organized. I don’t think that I’m going to find any help here. Are you a site moderator? I would like instructions on how to delete my account.

Thanks.

Simply use the .zip file which you can download right in Plex.
Or if Plex doesn’t run currently, zip up the Logs folder.

You didn’t offend me, and I was mostly just trying to say take a deep breath and try to calm down instead of jumping on people. I agree with sometimes its best to just walk away. I often times have to remind myself that when I get heated and have been told the same things by people on this exact forum when I have gotten worked up.

Its because the subject has been beaten to death on these forums. They aren’t angry at you or anything like that, it’s just that people that know this platform really well know that the intricacies to how the agents work and their ability to scan files just doesn’t really make it possible to change the way files have to be named. I also think that the people in that other post were being rude. They should’ve explained that this subject has been discussed countless times on the forums with the result always being that it just isn’t really possible to get the agents to function correctly without a complete rework of them if the naming conventions are changed.

I am not a site moderator, but I can tell you if you really want to delete your account the option is present on your server when you go to the account section. I would encourage you to take some time to think about it, but ultimately do what is best for you. Sorry that there wasn’t a better answer, hopefully you can walk away from this without any hard feelings.

OK, thanks. Here is the log file.

Plex Media Server crash.zip (143.2 KB)

Thank you for the response. I was shocked that my replies were perceived as “jumping on people.” I clearly posted a feature request that users not be forced into a rigid music folder organization. I did not post a request asking for help organizing my music files. Given those facts, if I were trying to be antagonistic, I would’ve replied to certain users that, from the perspective of my stated feature request, they’re not really trying to be helpful; they’re just passive-aggressively telling me, “You’re wrong to be asking for such a feature; now here’s how to be a good little subject and conform to the totally awesome Plex music library system.” I didn’t jump on anyone like that. Please compare my replies with axemanuk666’s “Good luck mate… Yer gonna need it!” which received 3 likes so far. The main reason that I’m just about done with this forum is your criticism of me contrasted with the failure by you or anyone else to say a single word criticizing what I saw as a clear attack on me.

I didn’t find other feature requests for more flexibility in music library folder structure and folder/file naming. If this subject “has been beaten to death on these forums,” doesn’t that mean that many others want the same thing? And if that’s true, why are so many users insisting that the answer to my feature request is to just give in and conform, instead of showing support for my request? I’m really confused about that. But it’s clear that many users are very hostile to the stated purpose of the Feature Request section, which is, “We love hearing from you and we are always looking for ideas to make Plex more awesome.”

If the existing agents are completely dependent on file/folder naming, is it possible that what’s needed is a new metadata-oriented agent that isn’t?

Finally, I felt that your statement that “running off to start another post where you purposely leave out the relevant information is not going to make you very many friends around here” was uncalled for. I honestly thought that a crash encountered when trying to install an update after following beckfield’s advice should be reported separately in the appropriate forum category. I had absolutely no idea that this was frowned upon. Further, I did attempt to provide all of the relevant information, but was unaware of how to do so when the log file was very large and Plex wouldn’t run. Both the second post and my failure to provide a complete log were honest mistakes on my part.

It’s clear that there’s a very big disconnect between my views and those of the other users of this forum. I don’t feel that I really belong here. Thanks.

Well I’m not going to write some long drawn out thing. What I did say is that everyone in that thread reached a level I would call rude. I did not say it was exclusively you.

I don’t think I have seen a feature request for changing the naming conventions, but I’m sure others have. What I have seen and been a part of is people frequently reporting it as a bug for it to be explained in depth that the agents were carefully designed to use the naming conventions that they do and changing it would both be an enormous undertaking and would likely screw up the agents ability to understand the current naming convention which would be infinitely worse then try to push new folks onto the already existing naming convention since basically everyone using Plex right now is using the existing convention and asking all of them to conform to a new convention would be catastrophic, not to mention all the tools that have been designed to use the current naming convention like FileBot. Your right that a few people would like it, but unfortunately it would negatively impact, in exactly the way your are experiencing right now, the overwhelming majority of users on the platform. Maybe it is possible that a new dedicated agent could be made that wouldn’t require the current agents to be overhauled but I foresee that being a massive undertaking and pretty unlikely to gain the traction needed to move it forward.

I concede that my comment was a little rude, but I was calling it how I saw it, even if that was wrong. I apologize for that and hopefully you can see after these exchanges that I am absolutely willing to have a productive conversation with you. I don’t want you to think that everyone around here is trying to chase you out of here, and I think that other thread was an example of a conversation getting unnecessarily heated. If nothing can be done then I am sorry your experience was poor, but I think if you take some time on here you will find that overwhelmingly the community of Plex is pretty great.

Apparently I lied about this being drawn out
