PlexMediaServer is currently unavailable after upgrade from DSM6 to DSM7

Server Version#: 1.41.2.9200-70009200

I upgraded from DSM6 to DSM7 today. I followed the Plex upgrade instructions, but now the web browser page tells me that my Plex Media Server is currently unavailable. I gave the PlexMediaServer internal user access to the Media folder after the installation. Not sure what went wrong.

Thank you,
Steve

When you upgrade from DSM 6 to DSM 7, there are a whole lot of details.

I presume you upgraded from DSM 6 Plex → DSM 7 Plex ?

If true, when you look in the “Plex” shared folder,
do you still see “Plex / Library / Application Support / Plex Media Server” ?

Yes, I uninstalled DSM 6 Plex before I upgraded to DSM 7. And then installed the latest DSM 7 Plex.

I still see “Plex / Library / Application Support / Plex Media Server”.

You probably missed one small step (which is VERY common)

To remedy this:

  1. Uninstall the DSM 7 app and select the ERASE option
    – This removes the empty DSM 7 Plex instance you’re now seeing

  2. Open FileStation

**The most important points here are:

  • Full Control
    and
  • Apply to this folder, sub-folders, and files

as you give the new username PlexMediaServer control over everything in the Plex shared folder

(DSM 7 took away all the privileges I had for DSM 6. This is why you need to assist by granting permission manually)

I followed your instructions, but I got this error at the end of installation:

ERROR: Unable to migrate existing
“/volume1/Plex/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server”
to DSM 7. System error O. Migration log file:
/volume1/Plex/Migration.log

All my media and setting seem to have come across okay, but the migration.log file reports it was not able to change ownership of some files. I have uploaded the migration.log file.

Thank you

Migration.log (2.2 KB)

When you were setting the permissions (Full Control) for PlexMediaServer,
did you forget to check the box “Apply to this folder, sub-folders, and files”

If your “server instance” did come across ok but it’s complaining about some files / metadata, i would go through and check it

Uploaded an image of what I used for the setting. Did I miss something?

that is the definition.

When it came time to apply them

Did you save and apply here?

Yes, I saved and applied the setting there. Should I try again?

All good then.

As long as it didn’t give you any errors

-and-

When you started PMS on the Syno, your server was there and ready the way it should be.

The only thing you might need remember to do – Also grant permission for the new PlexMediaServer user instead of “Plex” to read or read/write your media shares.
