A pretty graph to look at, hot off the press (and now another one)
I've been doing some log analysis lately to see where in the world our users are. The picture attached is a graph of the top 15 countries, and the raw numbers are below.

There's a couple of surprises there for me, the main ones being how low S Korea and Japan are on the list, then again, they are both countries that use their own character sets, so maybe that has had an impact.

It is also (I think anyway) a testament to how great comms are in Northern Europe given that 3/4 of the Scandinavian nations are in the top 15 (with Finland coming in at number 16). Do also note that our second biggest users, the ever delightful Swedes, only have a population of about 9.5 million, as opposed to the US's 305 million. A bit of simple arithmetic (and I've belted this out roughly in my head just now, so feel free to flame me if I've messed it up) tells us that there are more than 10 times as many Plex users per head of population in Sweden than in the US - pretty amazing hey!

OK.. here’s something you might also find interesting. I spent a while punching the world’s populations into my spreadsheet and crunched some numbers.



The graph below shows you what the comparative userbase is in different countries when you take population size into account, I started by setting the US to 1000 users and letting everything else adjust in proportion and this is what came out.



Don’t get confused by this… these aren’t the actual numbers of users, just the equivalents if the US had 1000 users.



If your country isn’t there, it isn’t because you don’t exist, it is just because either the population of your country is less than 1 million, or, there were too few users in your country to be statistically significant, so weird results were coming out.

So, you can see that Sweden has 11 times the number of Plex users per head of population that the US does, whereas Indonesia has 1/125th of the number of users per head of population (8/1000).

I’m really surprised with the U.S usage.



Isn’t Mac market share at about 7/8% in the States at the moment?

Taking that into account it makes the European showing even more impressive (unless Swedish Mac market share is unusually high!).

Yeah… I think it has more to do with with the prevalence and quality of broadband availability than Mac market share (although obviously the latter will have an impact).



It’d be interesting to see a similar graph of XBMC usage across the various platforms they support, and to put it side by side with this one.



Thetvdb’s logs would also yield some pretty interesting numbers I suspect.

The Mac vs. PC ratio in Sweden is actually slighly lower in Sweden compared to USA. We are somewhere between 3-5% (the last I heard at least).

The percentages, aggregated into EU as opposed to member countries, judging by the numbers ;) (comma being the equivalent of a period in Europe, not the thousands separator, of course)

Ah, it was the commas that threw me.



One then needs to consider the relative populations to get an idea of relative saturations.



According to Wikipedia - EU 500 million (near enough), US 300 million (near enough)

→ US x 1.4 = EU



26 x 1.4 = 36.4



36 : 48



So, on a per capita basis, the EU has 1/3 more Plex users than our American cousins.



If one takes Scandinavia out of the European numbers, then it is not far off 1:1 with the US taking a slight edge.



Looking for somewhere to move :slight_smile: … I’ve always had a thing for Norway (truly beautiful country, particularly in the Summer).

Fun to see that Scandinavians are so happy for Plex. Maybe it is because of the long winter, we need good media centers to get through it.



Shocked to see that the Swedes have the upper hand though, I guess it is because of the fine plug-in they made caused some media writing in Sweden. If someone is able to tame the NRK nett-tv and put it into Plex, the word will spread like wildfire around here and maybe we can compete with the Swedes to be be the most Plex loving people in the world.

According to this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_count…broadband_users Norway actually has a higher percentage of the population connected than Sweden (29.8% vs 28.6%)… this surprised me as I would’ve thought infrastructure would be a lot harder to build in Norway (it isn’t exactly a flat place!).



Subjectively from someone who bounces around a bit, are Swedish connections quicker on the whole?

Yepp,

Comparing "high" speed internet connections in hotels. Usually in Sweden you have at least 2-5mbit (more or less dedicated) while if you stay in hotels in other parts of the world (Asia, Americas, Africa) you should be happy if you get 1mbit "high" speed internet.. ;)

Don't know about Norway, but according to a report from the swedish Post and Telecom Agency (PTS), it looks like this:

84% (of the population) use the internet
74% have an active (wired) internet connection in their home
98.3% have have some form of wired broadband available
97.9% have xDSL available
37.3% have coaxial internet access available (cable TV network)
34.8% have fiber connections available

"Broadband" (in the report) is defined as a connection which has (or can be upgraded to) at least 2 Mbit/s or better downstream.

The poulation of Sweden is ~ 9.2 million.

I have a 100 Mbit/s (both ways) fiber to my house which costs me ~$US36 a month.

Nice to see The Netherlands high in the charts, given that’s a very small country (the smallest?) compared to the others. About time you guys also release some nice Plug-ins for the dutch users :wink:

like uitzendinggemist or rtlgemist, where you can watch programs from dutch tv.
