Plex useless for 4k playback

Server Version#: Version 1.40.3.8555
Player Version#: assorted

I normally use plex to feed a nvidia shield pro
but it doesnt matter if Im playing a 4k video on my tv or directly on computer
(8 cores and 64 gigs of ram, + ssd drives)

Virtually any 4k video I get the “server not powerful enough” message or the “bandwidth”
message or … pick any message of your choice that means this is not going to play anything. Frankly Im shocked it simply doesnt display “F-off I dont want to!”

If I load up vlc… plays without issue
if I load up kodi… same…it simply works
if they didnt have such crap interfaces I would of dumped plex long ago, and at this point Im almost willing to put up with that because they actually work, without making me want to run over my shield.

I have once again spent way too much time trying to trouble shoot one more plex issue to no joy

I have analyzed my wifi signal
I have read way to many reddit posts,
I have tried every plex setting known to man
I have checked the audio and video codecs and the bit-rates of files to make sure they are compatible…and they ARE

and still it doesnt play 4k EVER… that is unless I would like to enjoy watching that little buffering circle spin around every 40 seconds or so.
If you cant tell Im a bit pissed and fed up with wasting my time.

I have been a pass holder for many years and plex WAS a great piece of kit but its turned into a crap time sucking mediocre platform to stream bad tv so it can feed me never ending commercials.

ok… whining rant (mostly) over, any suggestions other than turn on direct streaming or turn it off or screw with every setting possible or???

I have tried pretty much everything I can that might be the issue. I am at my wits end and close to jumping ship and looking for something other than plex that is not so damn needy.

Would you mind sharing some of your host & host OS info please?
(whatcha got? )

The shield is the top shelf player. In my experience, there’s only one way to muck it all up – the subtitle burning setting. (Set to automatic and forget)

As for the rest of the settings –

  1. Quality – Original
  2. Audio – Take the default. Enable DTS, etc if your equipment has the capability.
  3. Subtitles – AUTOMATIC (do NOT select “Image Formats”)

My shield pro (2019) can DirectPlay a 187 Mbps MKV file, with subtitles, from a tiny ARMv8 cpu without any problems.

When you have a playback problem, what does the Plex dashboard say is happening? If the file is being transcoded, it will tell you why.

sorry for the slow reply I had to walk away from this for a while… if you couldnt tell from my post I was done…lol

Im running linux mint v20.xx
64 gigs of ram, the media is on 2 ea. 6tb sata drives mounted in a drive bay
plugged in via usbc, and the only player that cant play the 4k media is plex

the quality is set to original… and at one point every other setting I could find
audio is default… and again every other setting available at one time or another
subtitles are not set to image formats

thanks

its not saying anything about transcoding

@brenwa

I hate being the bearer of bad news.

  1. You’re using Mint
  2. Mint has proven itself time and time and time again to not be stable as a media server platform for PMS. (It’s a ‘ubuntu derivative’ for the workstation. It doesn’t hold up to server-grade loads)

ALL:

You should be seeing the announcement in a few hours

For everyone with their 4K rips AND have subtitles in them, which is where 99.9% of the complaints stem, several things were resolved.

There will be a forum preview. Details will be provided in the announcement.

to follow

ALL:

There was a minor flaw in the command processing to the transcoder.
It was requesting the wrong output format for the intermediate pipe stages.

It’s being fixed and a new build generated now.

I will test again as soon as the build is ready
