Plex video playback starts stuttering on NVIDIA Shield Pro but not on Roku

Since switching from a Roku ultra 4k to an NVIDIA Shield Pro I’ve been having issues with plex video playback where the picture will start stuttering/jittery “randomly” and the only way to resolve it is to go back to exit out of playback (e.g. back to the tv show listing or the tv guide) and start over.

This seems to happen only with tv not movies, and no other apps on the nvidia shield display the same behavior.

Exiting out and starting over is an impractical workound while watching an in-progress tv show since the only two options are “watch live” or “watch from start” and pretty reliably by the time I fast forward to where I was in a live tv show it happens again.

The physical link is full-gigabit.
The shield is playing the media directly with no transcoding of video or audio.

The only thing that jumps out in the server logs is:

Feb 06, 2024 10:09:22.398 [140654900362040] DEBUG - Failed to stream media, client probably disconnected after 12107776 bytes: 104 - Connection reset by peer
Feb 06, 2024 10:09:22.398 [140654900362040] DEBUG - Completed after connection close: [10.2.2.209:38106] 206 GET /library/parts/87392/1707188398/file.ts?autoAdjustQuality=0&hasMDE=1&location=lan&mediaBufferSize=209664 (10 live) #34a632 TLS 117ms 12107776 bytes (pipelined: 420) (range: bytes=2951547960-)

But I have seen these in the logs without the stuttering issue so maybe a red herring?

I’ve tried disabling all of the upscaling options on the shield but nothing seems to help.

Has anyone else seen this issue before?
Plex Media Server.log (1.0 MB)
nvidia_shield_client.log (577.5 KB)

Server Version#: 1.40.0.7775-456fbaf97
Player Version#: 10.9.0.5600
Tuner Make/Model: HDHR3-CC
NVIDIA Shield Pro (2019)

Happens regularly for me. Not on live TV (rarely watch that), but on downloaded TV shows. Sometimes pressing the back [10 sec] button helps, but other times I have to stop and restart the show. Very frustrating. For such a powerful device, the Plex Android client is just not very good.

Any updates? This issue makes plex essentially unusable on the shield

Bump, this is still an issue

This is still an issue, Plex version 10.14.0.553

I’m sorry for pinging you directly but you seem to be active with the community @sa2000 and no one from Plex seems to be looking.

Is there anything else I can provide to assist in debugging this issue? Is this a known issue to the dev team?

SA2000 is no longer with Plex.
( I believe he is now enjoying his well-earned retirement )

I do not have tuner capability (live in a poor reception area) but do have the Nvidia Shield Pro

Am I understanding correctly that the issue isn’t so much OTA LiveTV as it is normal playback ?

@ChuckPa correct I’ve seen this happen with recorded TV as well as live TV. I haven’t seen this happen with movies but possibly that’s just because I don’t skip around as often with movies I don’t know

I just reproduced Frame Dropping / ‘stutter’ under very specific conditions with
– Server 1.40.2
– Shield app 10.13.0.466 (cf77d59a)

The stutter is what frame drops look like.

I was watching normally and it did it anyway

My debug dropdown shows me the frames dropping so I can see the direct correlation between frame drops and stutter.

Given this is DirectPlay of TV which plays perfectly in other apps, I’m convinced there’s a Nvidia app problem. (not a big one … but enough to be a problem)

I have the logfile and will be presenting that to Engineering as well as make the video available to them should they want / need it.

Edit: Trouble ticket created w/ logs attached

Thank you for looking into this @ChuckPa let me know if I can help debug/test anything further.

Plex client on Shield playing DVD (MPEG2) content frame rate issues

The thread topic says DVD but the problem also reproduced with OTA content. I was able to narrow it down to a specific mpeg2 feature, the RFF flag.

Thanks I’ll keep an eye out to see if only MPEG2 content gives me issues
