Plex vs dlna video quality

I’ve noticed a discernable difference in video quality on the Xbox if a video is played with the built in media player via dlna instead of the Plex app. There is quite a bit of artifacting while using the Plex app. Is this a known issue? Are there settings I can adjust to resolve this issue? Thanks.

Are you direct playing while using the Plex app? The only time you should be seeing a difference is when the video itself is transcoding. (The most common cause for this is subtitles as they currently must be burned into the video stream)

Other than that, if it is a transcoding issue you can try double checking your video quality setting while the video is playing to make sure it is set to original, while this won’t prevent transcoding it will prevent transcoding the video down because of bit rate (and also not impose a bit rate limit when transcoding due to other factors)

According to the server, both the audio and video are direct playing. I recently upgraded the server to a 4Gh, 8 core CPU with 8Gb of ram running Windows Server 2008 R2. The only thing running on it is Plex Media Server. Since the upgrade, any transcoding has been pretty smooth. The server and Xbox One are both using Cat5E cables directly to a Gigabyte switch on the local network.
I’ll keep testing and post more detailed data about the issues.

Just to double check.

When you hit ‘A’ while playing the movie in the quality section it says “Original” ?

Are you on the latest Plex server? 1-2 versions before there was a bug that everything was displayed as ‘Direct Play’

When I checked the quality it was NOT set to original, but much worse (3mps). When I changed it, the quality was exactly where I expect it to be.
Is this a default setting somewhere within the app itself? The server is set to default local connections to “Original” quality, but that was not what was happening. Thanks for the help with this.

I don´t think so.

Had this a couple of times myself, but after I always changed to Original, now it stays that way …

Alright. If I see lower quality video, I’ll change it. After I changed one, I didn’t see any other videos that deviated from “Original”, but I’ll keep my eyes peeled.
Thanks again.
