Since I updated Plex web a couple days back, it hasn’t been casting via Chromecast- permanently buffers, occasionally gives me the “sorry, something went wrong” message. Other sites cast fine, and plex plays media in the web without issue, but it refuses to cast. Other servers in the house are able to cast without any problems.
Server Version#: 4.69.0
Player Version#: 1.24.5.5173 (I think, this seems to be the update number, what I got in settings. apologies if I messed up this or the above.)
I am having the same issue with 1.24.5.5173 on a 2020 Chromecast w/Google TV. It’s odd, because at the end of October, this update installed automatically and it had the reaction on only Roku devices, and I rolled back to 1.24.4.5081 and everything was fine. I neglected to turn off the auto-update and it looks like it reinstalled and now appears to be affecting Chromecast only.
I’m rolled back the server to *.5081 again now, but there also should be a new update in the next few days that may resolve this. The issue is *5173’s build.
To roll back, you need to uninstall Plex and reinstall from a past update. You won’t lose your libraries. There is a good chance these files are already on your computer, in a hidden folder (View Tab → Options → Change Folder & Search Options → View Tab → Select Show hidded files, folders, and drives → OK) OR just go into your user folder, click the address bar, type \appdata at the end of your string and it’ll display the subfolders.
C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Local\Plex Media Server\Updates
(Some users have reported this folder in their Program Files folder for Plex)
In this folder there will be the last 4 updates. After uninstalling, run the EXE in the packages subfolder of the version you want to install.
When uninstalling, exit plex and also end task on plex update service in task manager, then uninstall. You can’t, unfortunately, just roll back or install an old version over the newer.
Rolling back did not resolve it for me this time. I’ve tried a few additional steps, allowing insecure connections, remote quality changes, removed all automatic options, turned off subtitles, but still just does the rotating circle. Cleared app cache, data, uninstalled, reinstalled.
If I press the home button, it’ll play the audio only for what I tried to watch. Not sure what’s happening.
Well, it had nothing to do with Plex. I restarted the Chromecast and it worked again. Now I had asked for this step to be done way in the beginning before doing all this troubleshooting, but I suppose I should have started at the basics when I was home.
