Plex web player in Safari crashes when using external subtitles (.srt)

When trying to play .mkv file with external .srt file, the web player #4.61.2 stops loading with server CPU around 25%.

When playing the exact same file and external .srt file, in the Plex Player #1.33.0.2444-a220eae4 for Mac it starts playing immediately

Any suggestions?

Server Version#: DSM 7.0-41890, PMS# 1.23.5.4801

If I try to play it in Chrome (instead of Safari) it goes to “Convert (Maximum)” and hangs - with subtitles ‘None’.

File is 4K (HEVC Main 10 HDR)

Yeah I was thinking it was the Web Player as well, and couldn’t find a way to report a bug.

Did not know Safari is the only browser - thanks for the info!

Big Sur

Wouldn’t have a clue. Haven’t looked much into codecs. It only stops when using the subtitles though.

Took the file apart in MKVToolnix to see if there was anything there. The subtitles are either .ass or PSG. Which I then exported to .srt since Safari wouldn’t pull them directly from the .mkv.

The exported .srt is what plays nicely in Plex Media Player for Mac but not in browser

The embedded .ass won’t play in Safari.

Always use Direct Play if the server will let me

How will I know if my files comply with clients?

Thank you

Any info on when Safari (or other browser) will be able to handle the embedded subtitles?
