Plex will not list my Library by Title, keeps crashing Plex, will not change, and reverts to Artist?

Using Plex on new Synology NAS. I used Twonky server for years and never had issues!

What a bad experience, such a buggy app! Loaded 315 Albums, and now can not list my Library by Album title. Will not allow me to select it, reverts list to Artist Album, and then crashes the list. Why? What is going on with the integrity.

Why won’t it list the library by Title???

of this app?

First and foremost, your file names and file tags MUST be correct!.

Failure to comply can easily lead to the issues you are now experiencing.

Folder/File permissions are also very important on the NAS, another possibility, is that your database may now be corrupted.

  1. Make sure all folder/file names are correct, in the format Artist, Track Number, Song Title, .ext without any extraneous information such as bitrate etc…
  2. Likewise, make sure all tags are correct. No misspellings, no spaces that are NOT spaces, no dashes that are NOT dashes, etc. Again, without any extraneous information.
  3. Make sure all folder/file permissions are correctly set on the NAS.

After you have checked and double checked the above points, if you still experience the same issue, then download ChuckPa’s database repair script and run it on your NAS.

PlexDBRepair - ChuckPa

With a little luck, that should get you sorted, fingers crossed.

BTW, your NAS is anything but new, it hails from 2014 and is not the most powerful of machines. It has a Marvell Armada XP MV78230 CPU which is ARMv7hf.

In other words, most operations on this NAS will be slow, compared to an Intel powered NAS from the same era, so you must be patient when performing any operation on the NAS, especially those associated with Plex.

Allow Plex ample time to complete it’s maintenance tasks. Go to Plex Settings > Server > Scheduled Tasks and set it to run for an extended period of time. The more the better, since this is not a powerful NAS.

I am running optimize on the Music Data Base. It has been running an hour on a data base with 4000 tracks, and about 300 Albums. How long will this run, and can I stop it if it is going to run for more than a few hours.

I understand Plex was supposed to be superior to Twonky, but my experience so far it is temperamental and buggy. I am a fairly technical Mac and Windows person.

My data base was perfect using Twonky server and my tags were perfect.

I would not stop it from running, let it complete so that it may not have any possibilty to corrupt your database any further.

It will take quite some time to complete because the NAS is not the most powerful machine around.

Relax, watch some TV, make a cuppa or three and let the NAS/Plex do their thing.

The issue here is not with Plex alone, it also involves your NAS and the timing between the two and you need to understand and compensate for that, which is why I made my rant above … lol

Perfect is subjective, there is no such thing as perfect, but I get your meaning. Things are different in Plex from Twonky, as you are discovering, but Plex has some features that Twonky does not offer.

Unfortunately, your NAS is a bit of a hindrance here, as these advanced features require a little more horsepower than your NAS can deliver, which slows things down a lot.

If you want a better experience with Plex, then consider shelling out for a DS224+ or at least a latter model than the one you have, that is preferably Intel powered.

Your current NAS has reached EOL and beyond DSM 7.1.1 Update 8 (which fixes the disastrous update 7), I would expect no further support from Synology.

Thanks for responding. After optimizing, changing some metadata, artwork, the library looks good. It is sorting and appears to be perfect. It just took awhile a few days to get the setting sright. Plex has a lot of customization available in the setting so it is easy to get things wrong at setup. I still have no idea why Plex has Andrew Loyd Wright tied to the Sounds of Blackness??? However, I was able to edit the Artist from the 5 Albums I had tied to him.

Good forum, thanks for your input.

You’re welcome kind sir.

Just remember, be patient and you shouldn’t have too many issues with Plex.

As to the issue with Andrew Loyd Wright, it may be that Musicbrainz has an association with that, or it may be related to your tags.

Plex uses Musicbrainz to scrape a lot of the music metadata from.

If you are so inclined, look into purchasing a Plex Pass. That may help if you intend to use Plexamp on any of your devices.

So I found an album 16 flac tracks in a folder that I needed to add to my Library. What a effort, two hours later, I finally was able to get a album cover with 16 tracks into Flex. When I tried to add the folder it created an Album Cover for each track in the Library spread everywhere by track artist, really confusing, after finally finding them, merging, able to get one album in the Library. Twonky server you just dragged and drop the album and it scanned it in. I like the results in Plex, but it is a very quirky, buggy, app, probably because it has so many setting and tried to do some much automatic operations to the Library.

Again, file naming and tagging are of utmost importance. If you get it worng, then you have issues like you just described.

Remember, ALL files in an album must have the same tags, except for the track title and track number of course.

I recommend you only add the following tags to each of your tracks:

  1. Artist
  2. Album Artist (important)
  3. Album
  4. Title
  5. Year
  6. Genre
  7. Track Number
  8. Disc Number (where appropriate)
  9. Cover Art

Like so:

If you have a compilation album, then you should use Various Artists in the Album Artist tag and the actual artist in the Artist tag.

This will add the album to a Various Artists folder in your Library along with any other compilation albums.

E.G.

Also add the Disc number where appropriate for multi disc albums.

I recommend using Mp3Tag (free) for all of your tagging. I personally use Tag & Rename (commercial) for my tagging.
