Plex fails to do Movie - "Scan Library Files" - Quits prematurely

Server Version#:1.29.1.6316
Player Version#:4.93.2

I implemented a full library scan, but only 6 movies were scanned and the scan quit. After some trouble shooting I decided to try scanning my Concert Videos library, as this is also a movie library and the same thing happened, only 6 videos were scanned and the scanner quit.

  1. I have done nothing to the Plex Server except for updates.
  2. I cleared cookies and cache on my browser that is on the computer I normally use to no effect.
  3. I tried loading the webapp on the Plex Server computer to the same result.
  4. A library scan of my TV shows worked fine.
  5. Analyzing the movie library took an hour and ran though all movies.
  6. I have 6043 movies and 305 Concert Videos.
  7. The Server is Windows 10 Pro with all updates running on an Intel i9-9880H and an SSD512GB.

I have no idea when this problem began as it has been some time since I tried to do a full library files scan.

I have attached my server logs
Plex Media Server Logs_2022-11-01_13-24-52.zip (6.0 MB)

Thanks for any help!
Gary

This was my first post that JaysPlex7 has pasted here and I discovered errors in my understanding of what was going on and corrected the facts, then started a new post here in “server-windows” where I believe I should have posted in the first place. Plex fails to do Movie - “Scan Library Files” - Quits prematurely

I just updated the server software to 1.29.2.6364, but it did not fix the problem

Bad naming

Y:\TV Shows\War of the Worlds (2019) (2019-20XX) [1080p]5.1 DD+ x265\War of the Worlds (2019) - Season 2\War.of.the.Worlds.2019.S02E07.Episode.7.1080p.DDP5.1.H.265.mkv

Make above:

Y:\TV Shows\War of the Worlds (2019) {tmdb-86374}\Season 02\War of the Worlds (2019) -S02E07- [Episode.7.1080p.DDP5.1.H.265].mkv

Ref: https://support.plex.tv/articles/naming-and-organizing-your-tv-show-files/

And above was for shows

Sadly could not find traces of movies in your logs (The roll over) so instead please post a screen capture of your file system, showing a movie that isn’t picked up

Thanks, but the TV shows are found and listed and I have no issue with my TV Library. All seasons of War of the Worlds are complete and listed. I check as I add new shows and seasons and I have not had any problems with my naming technique.

I do not believe that I am missing any movie or TV show that I have added as my process includes double checking as the item is added.

My issue as listed in the topic, is with my Movie libraries. Plex fails to do Movie - “Scan Library Files” - Quits prematurely.

If you can discover why after only scanning 6 movies the scan quits and have a solution to fix it, that is what I’m hoping for.

As said, logs roll over, so you must upload right after it happens, and I still would like a Screen Capture, and your show naming is bad!

The title that didn’t show up he apparently figured out and corrected. He mentioned that in his other post I linked.

If movies that are named properly get scanned an imported into Plex, the scanner is working as intended. The same can be said if you manually analyzed the library and it took an hour, or it works when you try to refresh your metadata.

When I perform a manual scan my movie library without adding or deleting anything, (on a less capable computer) my scan lasts less than a few seconds. Occasionally, I can’t even move my mouse over to the activity wheel to see what’s happening before the scanner stops.

Dane, please correct me if I’m wrong, but I think Plex is just scanning the library looking for changes? (I would assume that happens very quickly) When you add a new movie, that is a change that Plex is detecting.

There is no benefit to scan individual movies over and over that have already been scanned when nothing has changed since the last scan. This is redundant, inefficient, and slowwww.

I didn’t dig into your logs and you may have some type of problem….BUT
If dbrich, dane22, and drzoidberg33 say there’s nothing weird going on with the scanner in your logs, I would be inclined to believe them.

Correct @JaysPlex

And I would really like to see the naming of the files, since there’s a HUGE chance they are getting mismatched or ignored, if not following the naming std.

Dear Dane22,

I really don’t understand why you are harping on me about the naming of my TV shows when I have said previously that all my TV shows are showing up. I have never had any problems with a main TV title folder in adding the date range in parentheses following the title of the show, even when the show has a year in parentheses as part of the name. My TV library is 1067 strong, made up of 2 part specials, limited and mini series and of course series with ten to hundreds of episodes, all of which have added without issue.

I pride myself in my organization of my Pex Library and use the Plex recommended labeling standards, and I will let it go at that.

I really appreciate JayPlex7’s information about a manual scan might take only moments if Plex doesn’t see any changes. That has been the missing information that I needed to hear. I had never experience that before, as I have always had a manual scan of my movies take a long time. Now I have a better understanding that everything is working and I can continue using Plex without worries.

Sorry, but when I saw you wasn’t following Plex Naming Guide for shows, I can only assume, that you also doesn’t do it for movies.

And as such, suspect that your issue is due to bad naming there as well.

Yes, you say shows are matched okay, but…And don’t get this wrong here, but you are simply lucky so far, that it works for you

So once again, please share a screen capture of a movie from your file system, as well as a new set of logs, right after adding a new movie, or doing a Plex Dance on a movie that misbehave

I’ll counter point that. Your logs show that the naming does not follow the standard.

Q:\Plex\Movies\Mad Max Trilogy (1979 -1985) [1080p]\2.Mad.Max.2.The.Road.Warrior.1981.1080p.BluRay.x264.anoXmous

Q:\Plex\Movies\Dead Man (1995) REMASTERED [1080p]2.0

Q:\Plex\Movies\Demon Slayer- Kimetsu no Yaiba Sibling's Bond (2019) Eng Dub [1080p]2.0 x264

I cant see the actual file names, so I cant highlight those specifically, but it should be:
Q:\Plex\Movies\Dead Man (1995)

for TV shows you use:
R:\Root\Plex\TV Shows\Kung Fu (1972-1975)
which should be:
R:\Root\Plex\TV Shows\Kung Fu (1972)

You can also check your logs:
Oct 31, 2022 12:27:34.070 [14160] DEBUG - Activity: updated activity 2f9d1d97-4ab9-4f56-be7a-31406db873a5 - completed 100.0% - Scanning Movies

In a catalog that goes back over 8 maybe 9 years when I started my Plex library I learned as I went and my early additions are a bit more at a learning level. That being said all the examples you pulled are all in my Plex library. I can see I may have been lucky, but I have always checked that when I add a movie or a TV show or a Album, they are actually scanned and added by Plex into the library. I both double check that as well as possibly change posters or add additional info.

Your concern is admirable, but I don’t have a naming issue that is resulting in Movies not getting added, TV show not getting added, Albums not getting added. I have never had a problem with additional information, i.e. adding additional detail after Title (Date). I intend to continue this practice, as Plex has no problem with it. Let me say that again, Plex has no problem with it.

I feel that my problem has turned out not to be a problem after all. I consider this issue closed.

Please rescan your library and provide the name of 1 file that is not being added. Include the server log after this scan.
