It’s so friggin nice when the Plex crew presents new features. I used to have problems with the audio drifting out of sync. Lo and behold the joy when i spotted an update to the PMP. Now i dont have to deal with the audio problem any more. Now i got stuttering instead. Don’t know what i preferre. I was running Win 10 1803 with the previous version of PMP with audio problems. But this is worse. Please fix this, like yesterday.
Having this issue with PMP too, it’ll randomly hang during playback for several seconds, the programme stops responding entirely >.<
I was just wandering in here to post a thread provisionally entitled “PMP is crap,. isn’t it?” because my main TV area is down for light renovations and my nVidia Shield TV with it. Have tried using PMP from the Windows 10 store on an i7 (5th gen) and it kept load/play/load/play while, as above, the Chrome player was better. Seems like it would just be easier to package a chrome app / shortcut.
Also, when using a touch screen (ASUS Aio) there is no normal way of leaving a playing or paused video in full screen mode. Do these people, who proudly write this stuff, ever actually use it themselves?
I’m having the same issue with stuttering MKV replay on my PMP; it’s been like it for ages, but last night was the worst; I gave up and used the Windows Movies & TV player, which was stutter free. The PMP runs on the same PC as my server running Windows 10. Looking at the thread, it would appear this has been a long standing issue. Any expectation for a fix? While I use Plex mainly for my music collection, I have a large number of DVD’s that I have ripped to MKV and are pretty useless through Plex.
I also have these stutter issues with Plex Media Player, I am on Windows 10 v1809 (Build 17763.134).
First I thought it might been Windows 10 v1809 but I guess it’s not and I do not want to convert all my files to mp4 or something else to avoid stuttering and it’s working fine in Mozilla Firefox 63.0.3 (64bit) no stutter at all.
I am using the latest Plex Media Player 2.23.0.920.
I’ve been having issue with my Win10 computer for a while. Nor issues on my iOS devices, Samsung Smart TV or Roku. Videos play fine in a browser on the computer. I found that if I end the subtask “qtwebengineprocess” it plays stutter free, but I lose the controls.
I have the same problem, local network is speedy enough for 15Mbps MKV, however playback on PC (app and chrome) is excessively buffering.
Edit: killing qtwebengineprocess doesn’t help.
I’m having this same issue. just built a new Win 10 computer with 1809. Plex Media player seems to have the video studder every 5 seconds or so. Audio is fine the entire time. (coming from a plex media server on local network)
Playing in a chrome browser works ok for a bit, but after a short time, the audio gets out of sync.
As a last resort, I tried the Windows store Plex app, and this actually seems to work ok, except when I’m doing anything on my 2nd monitor, the app will minimize itself on my main monitor.
I used the Plex Media Player on my Previous Win 7 computer all the time, without issue. So im guessing its an issue with Win 10, I’ve spent a bunch of time googling around, but haven’t found any solutions.
Hey, happy to find this topic. My plex on unbuntu server has some issue in playing mkv files right now. The situation is similar to the previous cases, crashing down with transcode error. There’s one thing different that, it will work on mobile app like android plex client and won’t start transcode when I use a desktop client. I’ve attached my logs. Thanks.Plex Media Server Logs_2018-12-23_11-08-28.zip (959.1 KB)
I’ve also started to notice this problem on my windows computers. Normally I would use chrome to play everything with no issues to report.
Ever since I got my plex pass, I thought I’d try out the windows app.
Tried it a couple days ago and didn’t notice any stuttering, but these last few days, everything I play stutters (roughly every second).
Tried changing the transcoder settings with no luck.
Anyone?
Again, just to clarify, this is the windows store app i’m talking about.
I am also experiencing a stuttering issue, I currently dont have a log but here is what I have noticed:
Windows Desktop (Plex site Download):
- Audio Plays fine.
- I get a half second stutter around every 5-10 seconds.
- No issues with UI.
Windows Desktop (MS Store Download):
- Audio Plays fine.
- Video starts fine but locks up after 5 seconds.
- When I mouse over after it has locked up the Video plays everything very fast to “catch up” to where the video is at.
- I then get heavy video artifact and image will lock up and only update every few seconds.
- Although the issues are worse after a minute of pausing and starting it seemed to fix itself, the download version is a lesser issue but did not fix itself.
Same issue as everyone else. I have 6 devices that work flawlessly but the PMP stutters badly. It seems as this issue has been going on for years? What’s going on here??
I have 150 mp4 movie files and they all stutter about every 10 seconds when played with Plex Media Player. Yes I do have the latest version, have upgraded many times. I checked the Task Manager (Win 7) and found QTWebEngineProcess.Exe at the top of CPU Time. So I ended task and the stuttering stopped.
I tried renaming the file, but PMP would not start without it. This problem has been around for several years now.
I can play it on another computer (Win 10) when I log into my QNAP NAS and click on Plex Media, it then opens another tab in FireFox and plays without stuttering.
Sure would like to see a solution to this problem !!!
Rick
Hate pile on, but ME TOO. After many months of smooth video on my 3 PC’s running PMP (NOT Win Store version), sometime before Christmas 2018 I (and my family) noticed video stutter on all movies. If we switch to the NVIDIA SHEILD or ROKU, no problems. This stutter occurs at least every 20 seconds, sometimes more often, looking like dropped frames. No interruption or glitch in the sound. Is anything happening on this other than our posting about it?
The server was recently updated and shows current as of this post (2-5-2019). I’ve updated the player just now to 2.27 (I think, it’s off the screen now, ended in 7), updated to 2.26 just yesterday, so things are moving, but no change at all in the stutter. The server and PMP are on the same computer(s), but I get the stutter when connecting to a different server as well.
Been using Plex server and media player for several years and it has been working excellently. Since Christmas I have been having the same stuttering issues that are being described above. I can’t find a fix. Hopefully a fix is in the works or someone has a solution. The problem seems to still be there even if I convert to MP4. This happens on the app and the web client.
So I’m having a similar problem. My computer isn’t quite as powerful as yours is (Ryzen 2200, 8GB, 1050ti), but that really shouldn’t hinder the playback. I use my PC for direct play in my theater. It’s really difficult to explain, but it seems to miss a frame here and there. It’s enough to drive you crazy. And it’s not subtle. It also does it when I use my Xbox One as my Plex media player in my theater.
Yes, all my drivers are up to date.
Is there a setting I’m missing??
HELP!!! This is my main media source in my theater!
I don’t know that this will fix everyone’s problem, but it did fix mine. Mitzsch lead me to a setting that fixed my problem. He suggested I “Enable” the Hardware Decoding" setting in the Video tab and this might help some, but it didn’t fix the stuttering for me.
You have to be in TV mode to access the settings in the link below.

What actually fixed my problem was enabling the "Native (OpenGL) setting on the Main tab.
My system has a MSI H87M-G43 motherboard that uses the Intel® HD Graphics 4600 GPU.
Also check out Sync Mode in the Video tab, that looked like a plausible setting that could fix stuttering in some systems.
Wow. After months of tolerating the stutter, your suggestion of changning to NATIVE OPEN GL completely ended my stuttering. On all my PC based systems.
Thanks you so much. Why the PLEX people couldn’t respond or know this is really disheartening.
Also note that the NATIVE GL MODE selection isn’t even mentioned on the VIdeo Settings document you reference. At all. HANDY!
Glad I could help someone!
It’s been bothering me for years. I just thought it was something I did when ripping DVD’s. It was only recently that I added TV and it had the same problem. That’s when I knew it wasn’t what I was doing.
Not every system is OpenGL capable, maybe that’s why Plex didn’t include it in their document. Still it should have been mentioned somewhere.
