Plex with Alexa and Sonos not working

Server Version#: 1.21.1.3830
Player Version#:

Can anyone help me interpret this error message I receive when launching the Plex skill in the iOS Alexa app:

“No supported Alexa devices detected with your account. Make sure you have at least one device online.”

I have a Sonos One as part of my system and I am able to play music with voice commands using Alexa as long as the media source is something other than my Plex Server. Furthermore, I am able to play music from my Plex server if I use the Sonos app to select and start the music.

What doesn’t work is an Alexa query along the lines of “Ask Plex to play music by Led Zeppelin in the Family Room.” If this command is issued to Alexa through my Sonos One speaker, then no music plays anywhere. If I issue that same command on my iPhone Alexa app, it actually starts playing music through my iPhone speaker, not through my Sonos speaker!

In the above error message, I don’t even know which account supposedly can’t detect the Alexa device. Is it Alexa? Sonos? Plex?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Michael

PS My Plex/Alexa/Sonos setup had been working (though not without some intermittent issues) until recently.

You cannot use Alexa and Plex and Sonos. The Plex Alexa skill can only playback to actual Plex clients. Since there isn’t a Plex client on Sonos it won’t work.

That is not the answer I expected to hear! If what you say it true, then it should never work. Yet, it was working for me until recently. And here is a whole thread with people having success with this set-up (albeit with limited reliability).

Further update: I got it working this morning. The problem is that more than more than one Alexa login was being used in my household across different devices’ Alexa app. Once I made sure they were all logged into the same Alexa account, I re-linked the Sonos and Plex skills within the Alexa app, and relinked Alexa in the Sonos app, and voila!

It is important to make sure that Remote Access is enabled and working on the Plex Server.

So your Sonos speakers show up as a Plex client when you list it through Alexa? So something like the following works for you?

“Alexa, play Plex to play Taylor Swift on Living room Sonos”

Assuming “Living room Sonos” is the name of your device.

I’m not exactly sure what you mean by “list it” through Alexa, but this definitely works:

“Alexa, tell Plex to play Taylor Swift in the Kitchen”, where Kitchen is a Sonos One, an Alexa-capable speaker that is part of my Sonos system.

Are you telling this to a different Alexa device or telling “Kitchen”?
