Plex without Internet??

I have set up a remote (no internet) server for my boss and been using Plex for the last three years without internet and loving it.

Within the last three months it has been intermittent whether any of the apple TVs connect or not and getting “Unauthorized” or Direct connection unavailable” on the AppleTV’s, now its all the time with no internet. I have tried all the Network settings used by others for this problem, different servers, different routers, reinstalling Plex Servers and Apple TV app……

Currently using:
MacMini version: 10.11.6
Plex Server version: 1.2.7.2987
AirPort Extreme
3 Apple TV’s

Cant understand if this is on my side or is Plex moving to a cloud base only direction? If so i need to look into another direction.

PerPLEXed,
Mark

With version 1.1 onwards of Plex Media Servers, if the server is signed in to plex.tv then all client apps need to authenticate - part of enhanced security changes

If there is no internet,

  • Ensure Secure Connections is disabled on the server (Settings / Server / Network)
  • If client apps have this setting, ensure it is selected: Fallback to insecure connections: Set to ALWAYS
  • Ensure server is not signed in to plex.tv (Settings / Server / General ) - sign out
  • Ensure Server GDM setting is enabled (Settings / Server / Network )
  • Ensure Plex Home and managed users is not use
  • Ensure there is no Pin on any account

See this support page which outlines the dependency on the internet
https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200484903-Internet-and-Network-Requirements

And See Release Notice for Plex Media Server 1.1.0

Thanks Sa2000,

I have tried all the settings you recommended and even rolled my server back to V 0.9.16.3, still no luck with connecting with any of my AppleTV’s without internet.
Might I have software version problem with my AppleTV? If so any way to roll it back?

Any changes to the Plex Hotfixes settings on the AppleTV (Settings/Apps/Plex) that might help?

This news of Plex requiring an internet handshake has really crushed me.

Mark

It appears that the Apple TV App does need the initial authentication with the server. Apps and the server do try to cache information so that in the event of internet outage, the connections would still work. It is not the recommended way of working but the application ought to have cached the credentials - similarly the server. So an Active internet connection is not needed for the Apple TV so long as secure connections are disabled and no user switching and an initial internet connection, however, is required for both client and server to sign in. Any legacy devices that cannot authenticate can be assigned a DHCP Reserved IP Address and the IP Address entered in the Server Network setting: List of IP addresses and networks that are allowed without auth

looks like I was able to get it working. Had to log out of AppleTV’s with my Plex Pass account and sign in with a free account. As well rolled Plex server back to V:0.9.16.3 not singed into server and listed netmask in “list of networks that are allowed without auth”.

Would you know if Plex working without internet has any priority with the building community? This is such a wonderful platform but for me all revolves around limited to no internet access.

Best regards,
