Plex won't update on DS412+

Server Version#: 1.20.4.3517
Player Version#: N/A

I have a problem very similar to the one described in this discussion - though there the solution was that the media files were in the Plex folder, which is not the case with me. Otherwise, getting stuck at the “Processing. Please wait…”-window, it’s the same.

In the past, when I saw the “server update available” notification, I went and downloaded from the Plex page, manually installed it on my Synology and that was it.
I don’t know why, but this hasn’t worked since about last November. I downloaded various versions of the PMS, but I always get stuck, right now I am trying 1.21.3.4046.

And having no idea on how to stop the process that’s going wrong, I always have to re-start the Synology, which is another nuisance.

Any ideas? Any help? I figured that this will resolve by itself, but it doesn’t, obviously.
Your help is highly appreciated!

Also, on that other post, @ChuckPa asked a few question, to save time I’ll answer them:

When you attempt to update the package,

  1. Is Plex running at the time?
  2. Are there any other ‘CPU heavy’ apps running?
  3. What does DSM report ? (does it get stuck in the installer?)
  4. If you manually open the Plex share in file station, navigate down into Library until you see the Logs directory, can you right click Logs and Compress to Logs.zip then attach that ZIP file here?
  1. Yes, IIRC this was never a problem in the past. But I now also tried with PMS stopped, no success…

  2. No, my Synology is not a hard worker.

  3. The same screenshot as in the other post.

  4. Yes - but is that really safe, uploading the logs so everyone can see them? (If you don’t mind the question.)

I’m currently running 1.21.3.4021 on my DS918+ with DSM 6.2.3-25426 and I can’t update to the new version 1.21.3.4046. When I try to apply the new package, it gives me an error “The operation failed. Please log in to DSM again and retry.” It looks like this build might be compiled for the wrong platform. I think they will need to fix the build or we wait until the next build.

May I have the download link you used please?

I will pull, open, and check the package.

The automation hasn’t changed so I’m VERY vested finding out why this doesn’t work suddenly.

Here we go: https://downloads.plex.tv/plex-media-server-new/1.21.3.4046-3c1c83ba4/synology/PlexMediaServer-1.21.3.4046-3c1c83ba4-x86_64.spk

But please note that while @emanteuf’s post indicates that he only had a problem with this latest version, my problem goes back to previous downloads.
That said, if you can find a solution I don’t care about the previous problems

@trumpy81 - I downloaded the logs yesterday already (from inside File Station) and have them attached now. If you need more just let me know.

Thanks to all of you!

OK, sorry, here’s another try. I now

  • stopped PMS,
  • deleted the logs,
  • let it run for a bit,
  • stopped it again,
  • tried an update (which failed the usual way)
  • restarted the NAS
  • started PMS
  • stopped PMS
  • pulled logs

And I hope this is more helpful now… Logs.zip (94.2 KB)

Hm, but that then seems to be a communication issue as well. I ticked the box that says

Use hardware acceleration when available

Plex Media Server will attempt to use hardware-accelerated video codecs when encoding and decoding video. Hardware acceleration can make transcoding faster and allow more simultaneous video transcodes, but it can also reduce video quality and compatibility.

And I understood this to mean that it will use hardware acceleration if available, it won’t use it when not available - but there seems to be no indication that ticking that box can do harm or negatively influence my system.

I went to the Package Center and stopped the process, then clicked Uninstall - this was quite a quick process, I did not delete files in the Plex folder or such.

OK, I did all of this, including the checksums.

The manual install failed as before (in Safari), when logging into the NAS via Chrome I get
“The operation failed. Please log in to DSM again and retry.”
but of course my retries did not improve the situation.

I did not (yet) try to install the old 1.18.5.2309 version of PMS the Synology has on offer.

Hm, any ideas? I have attached the logs again…

Well, I now tried a few more things, to no avail (using Firefox, undoing the link aggregation on the NAS, etc.) but you’r comment about my network setup was always nagging.

Then I remembered that while ago I had to install a proxy (to access a network for health professionals, HIN in Switzerland) and that this proxy in the past often had made problems. And what was new was that I was accessing my NAS from another machine now, with the proxy running. :man_facepalming:

Switched off proxy, installed PMS, switched on proxy. Happy life.

So - thanks everyone and sorry for the bother.

Here’s the link I used https://plex.tv/downloads/latest/5?channel=16&build=linux-x86_64&distro=synology&X-Plex-Token=xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
the file that’s downloaded is PlexMediaServer-1.21.3.4046-3c1c83ba4-x86_64.spk

I have secure DNS disabled in chrome and I’m not using a proxy.

I just tried using Firefox to apply the update and it was successful. Must be something with the bowser session causing the problem.
