If I have a day one Xbox One that doesn’t support 4k for games (it only lets me choose 1080p in Xbox settings app), will Plex still play 4k content in 4k, or is the entire app downscaled to 1080p?
Also, does the Xbox One S support 4k for Plex?
I have these same questions.
All versions of the Xbox One support playback of 4K material. The original xbox one (Before the S) cannot output 4K material so the Xbox One itself will downscale the video to 1080p.
The Xbox One S and X will all decode and play 4K material, but it will only output 4K material to the TV if the Xbox One is configured correctly in the video settings to output 4K material. If the Xbox One configuration says that it cannot output 4K material then it will be downscaled to 1080p by the Xbox itself after the app has decoded it. This setting will not affect Plex’s ability to decode a 4K file, just the ability of the Xbox One to output at 4K resolution.
