everytime i try to play movies or tv shows on the xbox i just get a black screen i can play the movies through the xbox media app through dlna but it reduces the quality badly
you going to need to give us more info on the file types and codec in the files so we can give you some sort of advice to fix or tell you why it is not working. also what exact version number of server do you have ( do not say "the latest") and what do you have the server installed on

as for more details about the video files all i know is they are mkv 1080p and mp4 1080p only anime episodes are working on the app any larger file doesnt play but plays fine on plex on my pc

thats why i gave you the link so you can see how to find out more about the file. resolution and file type simply are not enough info to give you any kind of real guidance. in the link you will see a section on how to get the Media Info XML. that will show pretty much everything about a file
When you say "Plex on my PC" do you mean the Web player, the Win 8.1 app, Plex Home Theater? you need to be specific as each of those has different capabilities
is the Plex Server installed on that PC? what are its specs?
I am asking because there can be a million things wrong and we need to narrow it down. i am guessing that it is not transcoding the video stream of file for some reason but probably needs to. so thats why the black screen. but that is only a guess
