The media keys on the Mac keyboard work fine to play/pause Plexamp while the computer is unlocked. However, if the screen has locked, you can’t play/pause/skip with the media keys.
Hmm, do you see it showing up in the Now Playing widget in the macOS sidebar or whatever it’s called? 
I see this as well, and then once I unlock, it still doesn’t work until I’ve refocused on plexamp
Yes, it does show in the Notification Centre. Having the Now Playing widget added or not added doesn’t seem to make any difference though.
Dumb question, does it work with other apps?
just to let you know, the media controls work fine on my iphone 11 pro when using plexamp
It seems to work only with Music. I tested with Music, IINA and VLC and only Music actually responded.
I guess I’d been using iTunes/Music for so long that I just assumed it would work for any app.

Are you sure? It should be pretty identical in both apps, except that v3 actually integrates with the system’s now playing, which should confer additional benefits.
Yes, I have both versions installed, 1.1.0 and 3.0.2 on MacOs Mojave 10.4.6
With 1.1.0 I can pause from locked screen, with 3.0.2 I can’t.
