Plexamp 3.2.1 on Windows 10 creates unwanted, extra desktop notifications

Server Version#: 1.20.3.3421 (Shield)
Player Version#: Plexamp 3.2.1 (Windows 10)

Often when I use Plexamp, it will generate a ton of extra Windows 10 desktop popups. I don’t have an exact repro 100%, but it typically goes like this.

  1. Make sure you have Windows notifications turned on on Plexamp Settings>Appearance>Send Notifications.
  2. Leave Plexamp PAUSED and IDLE for a while (hours?), or start it and leave it in a non-playing state.
  3. After time has passed, click on the Plexamp title bar (this may immediately generate a “now playing” notification AS IF I had started playing a new track)
  4. Navigate through the UI without playing any music… For example click the Music icon, then Home, then the Recently Added Music category, etc. At each click, you may see a duplicate of the “now playing” notification.

After a minute or so, this will stop happening. Maybe playing a track stops it, not sure yet.

Windows notifications suck already for reasons unrelated to Plexamp, and I am probably going to turn them off because this bug is aggravating… but I wanted to report this anyway.

If I develop a 100% repro I will post an update.

when this happens, can you please upload Plexamp.log so we can have a look?

I took a crack at a repro just now. This time I did not get the same notification storm I have seen before, but I saw something which seemed quite similar in that it was an unexpected notification. I started playing a track, but got a Windows notification when I paused playback. (Note that notifications were OFF when I started Plexamp. I turned them back on and started clicking around in this repro run. I had also wiped out the previous days’ logs to keep this log small and relevant.)

If notification on pause is expected behavior, ignore this log and I will keep looking for the notification storm.

Here is what may be a better log.

  1. Plexamp was configured to have notifications ON, and was left on PAUSE.
  2. I quit and deleted all plexamp.log files
  3. I restarted Plexamp which resumed in the paused state on this screen:
  4. I observed a notification pop up for the track–which I did not expect, since Plexamp was technically idle
  5. A second later I observed a duplicate notification.
  6. I quit Plexamp and grabbed the log.

While I originally reported that the notifications happened as I navigated around the UI, it is only a guess that navigation clicks spawned the notifications. It is possible they were going to happen anyway, and they just seemed correlated… this time I saw unwanted notifications and I did not do anything but start Plexamp.

Anyway, hope this log helps. LMK if I should try something else. In the meantime I will keep notifications on and see if I can catch a storm.

I believe the reason for the second notification in the log you posted is that artwork wasn’t initially available, and then become available shortly thereafter.

Interesting, both Win 10 notifications definitely included an album cover.

Thanks for looking in to this. I will keep an eye out for a notification onslaught.
