In my Plex music library, I’ve got Album Sorting set to By Name. In Plex Web and the Plex iOS app, when I view albums by album artist, they show up as expected – sorted first by album artist and within artist by album name.
But if I choose the same view in Plexamp, the albums are sorted first by album artist and then, apparently, by release date.
Sounds like you’re sorting the library by Album Artist, not by Title.
In the other Plex Apps, sorting the library by Album Artist will indeed produce a different result (primary order: Album Artist, secondary order: Title instead of Release Date).
Personally I think the way Plexamp is handling this is how I like my albums to be sorted. If you want to see the albums sorted alphabetically, sort the library by Title (optionally filtered by an individual artist)
I would expect Plexamp to respect the setting I have on the library:
For me, sorting by release date has no value. In the other Plex apps (as well as iTunes and the iOS Music app) I’m able to get the view I want: a grid of albums sorted by artist and then by title, the same way I sort my physical CD collection. It’s very frustrating that the app I spent a chunk of money for doesn’t seem to let me do this.
This selector has only an effect if you look at the albums of one particular album artist.
i.e. after you have selected in Plexamp Library - Artists
It does not affect the sorting if you switch the library as a whole into “Album” view mode – which is what happens if you tap on Albums in Plexamp.
The equivalent in the web app looks like this:
(and as you can see has a dedicated sorting drop-down, just like Plexamp has under the circled (...) )
Well, then I repeat my basic complaint: It’s frustrating that Plexamp doesn’t do what the other Plex apps (and non-Plex apps) do by default: Sort by artist and then by title.
Better yet, if there seem to be divided opinions about what the secondary sort should be, let us choose a secondary sort. I’ve seen that in other apps as well.
Much of my collection is classical music. If I scroll down to Verdi, for example, I would expect to see recordings of the same opera grouped together (by title). But the same holds true for my non-classical recordings as well.
I understand that there are other ways to drill into a collection. But this full-collection grid view is the one that I prefer, and the one that I have always used in other apps (incuding other Plex apps).
Right now we’ve hardwired the sort to be by artist title and then release date. It makes a lot of sense to me to respect the sort order on the library, so we can look to do that.
