Plexamp: Building the perfect beast.... well almost

I have absolutely loved the development of Plexamp since its rebirth and for me, with the addition of all the new features ( sweet fades, sonic adventure, Guest DJ et al) it’s almost the perfect music player. Just two additions to this awesome piece of software would allow me to ditch my Roon subscription for good. I know both these have been touched on before, one more recently.

  1. I use a couple of older Mac Minis as players/endpoints and would love an “Exclusive mode” feature for my attached DACS so that the system audio can be bypassed and allow bit perfect streaming. I saw in another post that there was a nod that this may happen in Windows. Is there any hope for us that run Mac OS ?

  2. Multi Room support. I know that this feature is on the cards for Raspberry pi users. Are there any plans to roll out Multi Room support to other operating systems? I would be very excited if the answer is yes!

I would love Plexamp to become the only music player I ever needed as in many ways Plexamp is superior to Roon.

regarding your first question, Plexamp for MacOS already has an option for strict sample rate matching (under playback → audio output) … in MacOS this is possible without requiring an exclusive mode to bypass coreaudio

Multi-room support is supposedly on its way, but its release in the PlexAmp app is TBD. Elan demonstrates multi-room support, again, an unreleased feature, apart of Plex Pro Week 2022, see video below:

Thanks for the reply. I already have those settings set up and the designated output is my DAC, but the DAC only reports 44/16 playback. The only way to alter this is to manually change the settings in Audio midi, which would have to be done on every change of bitrate, not really ideal. Sample rate matching works great in iOS but doesn’t appear to work in Mac OS. Which is quite sad.

Yes I watched that as well, it was very informative, but what I took from it was that the Multi Room feature was being aimed at the headless Raspberry pi setup only. I run headless Mac Minis x4 ( yeah, I can’t throw anything away if it can be repurposed) and wondered if Multi Room might be heading that way as well.

Interesting … I see the sample rate switching automatically in my system (sample rate reported in audio midi setup and the indicator on my dac are both changing)

posting plexamp logs from your mac (in ~/Library/Logs/Plexamp) might help to troubleshoot further

I’ll dig the logs out but in the meantime a screenshot showing what i’m on about.

Here are the logs from today. I wouldn’t know where to start looking I’m afraid.

thanks for posting … in the log, it looks like Plexamp doesn’t see a list of available sample rates for your USB DAC, not sure why that would be (Plex devs will be able to better interpret all that’s in the log)

Thanks for having a look. Hopefully someone might chime in with greater knowledge than I have.

It looks like we’re trying to set the sample rate of your DAC to 192kHz, I’m not sure why it’s not working. I see Audio MIDI app switching DAC frequencies over here.

Nov 03, 2022 16:34:17.010 [0x16ae2000] DEBUG - BASS: Changing mixer from 44100/2 to 192000/2.
Nov 03, 2022 16:34:17.010 [0x16ae2000] DEBUG - BASS: Resuming device (sample rate: 192000, num channels: 2, soft: 0, decode only: 0, force: 1)

Unfortunately that’s a bit of a rare case, and Pis are generally a much cheaper option, so that’s what we’re targeting (well technically Intel Linux as well).

Thanks for having a look at this for me. After swapping out DACS it would appear that the fault lay with my Meridian Explorer 2 DAC. It was working fine with Roon in exclusive mode but refused to switch sample rates with Plexamp, so I swapped it for a Cambridge Audio DAC which performs perfectly with Plexamp. So definitely not a Plexamp issue.
It’s a shame about the Multi Room project, but not a total deal killer as I can use Airfoil to play to Airplay endpoints. Maybe in the future?

Oh, glad to hear, I have a Cambridge Audio DAC over here too which I had previously verified worked well with the app.
