Plexamp doesn't respond to media keys

Server Version#: 1.20.1.3252
Player Version#: 3.2.1

Hi!

I’m using Plexamp on Windows 10 Pro. My keyboard has media buttons that I like to use to pause/play music, and skip to the next song. All my other applications like Spotify and Firefox respond well to the buttons. However, plexamp seems to ignore them.

Is there some setting for this? If not, how can I open a feature request?

Thanks

Hmm, afaik they should work already

hmm, apparently plexamp does respond to my keyboard’s media buttons, but not the ones on my mouse (Logitech MX Master 2S)

I contacted Logitech and they claim it’s PlexAmp not responding to the command correctly.

I’m not sure what commands those would be

I don’t know either… :man_shrugging:

just figured that since PlexAmp is the only application that doesn’t respond to my mouse, it would probably be an issue there.

Is there some way in which I can help figure out what the cause is?

sorry, i’m not sure. might require an electron upgrade, but i’m not at all familiar with that mouse and what commands/keys it’s sending.

Is there a way to find out what kind of commands or keys it’s sending? Logitech (obviously) claims they’re doing everything by the book but obviously there’s an issue somewhere

I’m also having the issue with media keys. The media keys work when I’m in spotify, chrome, any other media player. But wont respond to plex amp. Almost as if Windows doesn’t associate plex amp as being a media player

Exactly the same behaviour for me in Windows.

keyboard media keys should work fine.

the logitech mouse is doing something different.

Unfortunately keyboard media keys not working in plexamp for me whilst it is working in other apps. It’s as if Windows isn’t recognising it as a media player.

I’m experiencing the same thing, also with Logitech devices. But something I have noticed is that PlexAmp doesn’t seem to show up in Windows 10’s giant media player eyesore. Could that have anything to do with it? (Happy to provide any screenshots or records as useful.)

For anyone still experiencing this, it seems to be an issue with the Logitech Options program since media keys do work with plexamp without Logitech options installed. Some using other media players have had success fixing this by uninstalling and reinstalling Logitech Options. Will report back if/when I can confirm this as a fix.

I’ve contacted Logitech about the issue and they keep insisting I should just return my mouse. I doubt they’ll fix it anytime if this is how they deal with bug reports.

Uninstalling Logitech Options doesn’t work for me because it also resets the button configuration so the mouse no longer has media controls. Reinstalling Options doesn’t seem to make a change either.

I am having the same issue with multimedia controls on my windows machine.

I do have Logitech mouse with options installed BUT multimedia controls arent sent from the mouse and work on every other app with no issue - so, maybe plexamp needs a tweak to work properly alongside options (uninstalling options isnt an option for me as i need all the buttons on my mouse)

Hello here.
I just get a Logitech MX Keys, and I’ve got the same problem as you all : the media keyx aren’t controlling Plexamp… on Windows10 and on macOS BigSur 11.2.1.
I’ve try the two system.

Before, on my windows computer, I had an apple keyboard Apple MB110F (the one wired and with numeric keypad), and with this one, the media keys were working (I had installed bootcamp with some drivers for the keyboard on windows 10 to have the Apple FR layout).

I hope there will be a fix someday…

Hello again,
I’ve try something, and I have a workout since Plex decided to fix the bug.
But it will have an impact on all apps for the 3 media keys : Play / Previous / Next
To summarise, I set a KB shortcut to the key on the logitech app Option, then I set the same KB shortcut in Plexamm “Global Keyboard Shortcuts”. Only this order will works, because if not, Option will not recognise the key’s combination… And for all applications, otherwise, it will not work…
So… for the Play key :
First, go to Option, All Applications, set a shortcut, I set to Ctrl + MAJ + 9 (as I have a MAC MX Keys, and AZERTY FR, I choose my ç key, but for plex it will be a 9…

And after, go to Plexamp : set the same shortcut

And : bingo, the media keys are working, but if you want to control another app, you’ll be fu%$€d… unless the other app can be set to another shortcut…

But for me, as I don’t use anything else, it’s good.

Oh !
I’ve got Spotify working…
I had to set an application in Option :

And for this application, I set back the default preset :

And, it works fine !

All you have to do, is to select the All Applications :

And Plexamp still works with the shortcuts I definded when it is launched, of course.
The same for Spotify.

Running 3.4.5 currently, but had problems with at least the past 2 releases.

I previously had the MS Surface Ergonomic Keyboard and media keys worked with PlexAmp no problem…

I needed a KB that could connect to 2 comps, so I went with the Logitech Ergo K860 and the media keys no longer work. In addition I have the Logitech MX vertical mouse and it has a button that’s also assignable to the “play/pause” action which would be super convenient, but that never worked…

My (not completely fleshed out theory) is that Plexamp didn’t properly/fully register with Windows Media Key functions, since even when using the MS keyboard where media keys worked, the media overlay never displayed:

Though - it could be something else as to why the overlay doesn’t show up:

I can only assume that the SystemMediaTransportControls class is being used and not the deprecated MediaControl class

Where as when I use the volume up/down media keys on any keyboard, the volume overlay is displayed as expected.

Thanks @Pili for the workaround - I had thought about it, but I wanted to keep the same binding in case I used any other app (on occasion I do use Spotify, but not regularly at all) - I bound my shortcut to ctrl + alt + F8 - ctrl + alt + up/down already work for volume and Fn + F8 is my play/pause button.

So I just went back and re-read this thread since the problem was annoying me and I’m still used to my fn + F8 (well, F5 on my MS keyboard and F8 on the logitech).

Can confirm - uninstalling logitech options now allows Plexamp’s default globalshortcut registration to function as expected! Thanks @Tombadog

I had Logitech options 8.36.86 installed → removed → restarted plexamp → global shortcut heaven

Installed latest - 8.54.106 → restarted plexamp → no more global shortcut

Uninstalled → didn’t even restart → globalshortcuts work!

Looks like other electron based apps are having some problems with logitech options as well:

Media controls on the mouse never worked for me (I’m using plexamp 99.999% of the time), so I’m not missing/losing anything that I’ve noticed yet by uninstalling Logitech Options. All I know is I’ve already wasted enough time messing with this.

Looks like there were some Mac OS specific Electron Bugs regarding media keys in the 8.x builds:

No idea if that would impact Plexamp since we stopped getting electron details in the release notes with version 1.1:

However, I’m on Windows and @Tombadog seems to have hit the nail on the head.
