Plexamp Feedback

First off, some gushing-- just to get it out of the way. (We can both pretend it didn’t happen and avoid the awkardness after, kthx)

So, I just discovered Plexamp, lifetime plexpass subscriber since 2016. I had no idea Plexamp even existed until last week. During that time it’s completely turned my music consumption upside down. I’ve been in the process of shifting back from online streaming as my primary method for consuming music (still will augment w/ streaming, but want local audio quality and curation).

It’s been a complete dream to be able to enable radio for MY music library. The app has some amazing polish and things work very well. The features that I keep tripping over are awesome, like built in synced lyrics. I know this is a lab effort, but damn, quality dev work folks.

Got a few asks, I’m sure most are in your pipeline already.

Windows 11 + Plexamp 4.6.1

Android 13 (Oneplus 9 Pro) + Plexamp 4.6.2

Linux (Pop_OS 22.04) + Plexamp 4.6.? (flatpak)

  • Windows: Register Plexamp as Media Player

  • Allows for various media programs/hotkeys etc to control playback

  • Windows/Linux: Am I nuts or is there no volume control in Plexamp itself? Honestly, this bothers me far less than I thought. Wouldn’t even mind this as an option.

  • General: In “now playing”, you can click/tap on the album art and toggle it back and forth between album art and the visualizer. It’d be nice to access lyrics faster w/ less clicks. Maybe add an option to allow this to also toggle to the lyrics view? Might take some work to get it to work with the lyrics layer, as I know that has some tap/click interaction (damn awesome feature btw)

  • Android: On Android Auto, the UI seemed pretty minimal. I’m assuming things are still getting stubbed out there. In the interim, having some radio buttons on screen in the car would be amazing.

  • General: Any plans to extend past TIDAL for music? Say with like, Deezer? More curious than anything. The idea of Plex multiplexing more of my streaming services for me, especially with app quality like this is appealing though

Thanks again, you folks are awesome!

Thanks for the kind words, we appreciate them!

On the list for sure, the NodeRT project we wanted to use for that was in a state of decay, but now it looks like it’s come back to life again.

There are global hotkeys already in the desktop app (Settings > Advanced > Global Keyboard Shortcuts) if you haven’t seen those yet?

Hot-keys or Settings > Appearance > Player > Show Volume Control.

This is mostly due to limitations of that platform, sadly.

I wish, but those integrations are hard to come by, and involve a lot of integration work. Personally I’d like to see Bandcamp integrated as well for purchasing…

Tidal in master quality would be awesome!

Sorry, we don’t believe in the :snake: :oil_drum: of MQA

Rumour has it that Tidal is dropping MQA altogether in favour of higher resolution lossless FLAC, see e.g. here.

(also, the business that oversees/develops MQA has recently declared bankruptcy, see here.)

Kinda like the betamax of streaming at this point. :grinning:

Not a valid comparison, as betamax was actually qualitatively superior to VHS.
MQA on the other hand was genuine :snake: :oil_drum:

@elan did you noticed this?MQA is going into administration | What Hi-Fi?

Probably Tidal change the way to stream hi-res content, in the near future…

Best news all week.
