Users of Plexamp on Android Auto are not able to are reporting a significant limitation that affects everyday usability — the inability to switch between music libraries directly from the Android Auto interface. The switch indeed blocks the app from working.
I am a user with three libraries can effortlessly switch between them on the standard Plexamp mobile app by selecting the library name. However, when connected to Android Auto, this option completely blocks the app from working. The interface provides no visible control, icon, or menu after the changing. The only workaround is to select the desired library on the phone before driving, which undermines the purpose of Android Auto’s hands-free design and poses a potential safety concern..
The justification often cited in older discussions—“Android Auto does not allow changing libraries”—is technically unconvincing. Plexamp functions as a UI layer communicating with the same server logic available on the mobile app. The restriction is not imposed by Android Auto’s APIs but rather by the current design implementation of Plexamp.
Adding a proper library switcher should be a minimal UI enhancement, feasible within Android Auto’s supported interface components (e.g., simple list or selector). Such functionality would bring Plexamp’s Android Auto experience in line with its mobile counterpart, maintaining consistency and ensuring that users can safely access all their media libraries without needing to handle their phones.
This big fix request deserves prioritisation in future Plexamp releases, given its impact on both user experience and driving safety.
