Plexamp - information by bluetooth

Hello,
When I connect the plexamp via bluetooth, it does not send information about the track that is being listened to, nor can songs be passed from the connected device.
It is as if bluetooth functionalities are not implemented.
It would be fantastic.
Thank you,
Pau

All of the above was working when I connected my Android phone per Bluetooth to any rental car I drove so far.
The song title, album art and artist appear in the head unit.
I can use the skip/pause/previous buttons on the steering wheel. (although it can take a second or two before there is a reaction).

I was about to create a new thread when I found this issue. I can confirm that the Bluetooth track information works on Android in my car as well as on Android when connecting to my receiver (Onkyo TX-NR656).

However, when I connect to my receiver using my desktop running PlexAmp on Windows 10 over Bluetooth, the track information is never displayed. Annoyingly as well, my receiver won’t play any audio until it receives some data, so I end up having to start a YouTube video in my browser (which does pass through information properly, although it’s not even outputting to my receiver).

Perhaps this is an issue in Electron or Expo, or perhaps even some kind of security feature of said frameworks? It would be great if someone can attempt to reproduce this on macOS as well.

@DenzoNL I have a Onkyo TX-NR676. Be sure to check for any firmware updates for your model every few months. According to the most current update, Bluetooth issues #2 and #4 were resolved on the 09/23/2020 update. I can confirm that if you update to the January 2021 update, that Bluetooth issues should be resolved.

I’ll try this tomorrow, thanks!

EDIT: @DEA.86 unfortunately, that didn’t work. S

I’ll be doing further testing today on both Mac and Windows today. I’m very surprised that update to your Onkyo didn’t resolve the issue though.

Thanks a lot, I appreciate it. I’m pretty sure it’s down to Windows+PlexAmp (or its stack) itself as I’ve tried different Bluetooth adapters as well as different software (foobar2000, browser) all of which display playback information fine, just not from PlexAmp. I haven’t got any other receivers to try unfortunately, and I can’t park my car near enough to connect it to my desktop pc for testing xD

Bluetooth track data for Onkyo can be confirmed for PlexAmp Android but does not work for PlexAmp for Windows or PlexAmp for Mac. The artist, track, and album data do not appear.

Windows:
Pepperjobs Mini-PC with BT 4.2 - Win10 Pro - experimented with rollback of drivers and still had no pass through of data to the Onkyo receiver.

MacOS:
MacMini Late 2012 Catalina with BT 4.0 - audio passes through as UNKNOWN.

Personally, I’ve opted to NOT use bluetooth at all only because BT is very sketchy and worse when there are a multitude amount of wireless interferance from other devices. I have Chromecast and Airplay as my daily drivers. I’m not certain if both Mac and Windows use A2DP though since in Android phones, BT and the A2DP protocol are the stacks that work together to send music data with the stream, like I have in my phone now. I’m not certain if Windows or Mac platforms do that. I could totally be wrong.

Found in a BT help page for model TX-646 (a previous model but not yours) where it states:

  • Try plugging/unplugging the power of the unit and try turning on/off the Bluetooth-enabled device. Re-startup of the Bluetooth-enabled device may be effective.
  • The Bluetooth-enabled devices must support the A2DP profile.
  • Near components such as microwave oven or cordless phone, which use the radio wave in the 2.4 GHz range, a radio wave interference may occur, which disables the use of this unit.
  • If there is a metallic object near the unit, Bluetooth connection may not be possible as the metal can effect on the radio wave.

If mobile devices like android tablets and phones with BT 4.0 to 5.0 can send the data to the Onkyo receiver, then they must have the proper BT audio stacks to do so. Perhaps the desktop platforms don’t?

I’m stumped though since you say other players show this data. On my Mac though, Spotify won’t send any data to the receiver via bluetooth so milage may vary depending on the platform.

I agree with you that Bluetooth is quite sketchy and not an ideal protocol, but in this scenario it’s really the best option I have if I want to stream Plex music from my desktop to my receiver with gapless playback. I can’t really live without the latter which makes Chromecast a non-option.

In an ideal world I’d run an HDMI cable from my desktop to my receiver but this is presently impossible to do cleanly.

An even better option would be a Raspberry Pi with a good DAC and a headless Linux version of PlexAmp which can then be controlled with other PlexAmp clients, but it seems like this is still ways off.
