With the new Plex experience in the Plex app on Apple TV, how will I be able to play my Plex Music on my Apple TV? There is no dedicated Plexamp app for Apple TV, is there?
Many people have been asking and I’ll we’ve heard from Plex is crickets…
Likewise photos. I mean granted, photos in the plex app were almost unusable, but at least I could get them on my tv screen. Now: no app.
Do you use an iPhone or iPad and, if so, do you use Plexamp on it? If so, you can play music on your Apple TV via AirPlay.
In Plexamp on your iPhone or iPad open the player selection dialog. To the right of the local device in the list should be the AirPlay icon. If you tap it (and AirPlay is enabled on your Apple TV) you should should be able to select your Apple TV as a target under Speakers & TVs.
You can probably do something similar for photos via screen mirroring, once they get the dedicated photos app sorted enough to be usable.
I’m not suggesting either of these is ideal.
Oh, I know how to do all that, it just seems kinda kludgy to have to resort to that.
You’d think after using Plex for 11 years I’d be used to having the rug pulled out from under me, but …
And my rhetorical question detector is usually so good… ![]()
Turn off auto app updates on your Apple TV and run the old version until it quits working.
That’s exactly what I’ve done today!
The exact same question applies to the NVIDIA Shield that plenty of us use.
What happens to the music part there when the “Plex experience” hit us (Plexamp is not available there, not to mention photos which is alpha at best in mobile OS’es)?
Any way to disable autoupdates at Shield as well (preferably app specific)? Also need to start to look into Emby and Jellyfin which will likely benefit now that Plex has decided to self implode.
You can disable auto-updates in the Google Play Store settings, but I have not found a way to do it individually for single apps, so you’ll still want to check in occasionally on there and update other apps that might have updates. Not a big deal, as it’s not like service providers disable functionality on previous versions immediately after releasing a new version.
