I recently caved into PlexPass just for PlexAmp. As a mobile client it works wonders and could be a drop-in replacement for my different streaming services.
One of my issues with PlexAmp is with how unintuitive the Desktop experience is with it. Currently when listening to a track, the full view isn’t much better than what a small window of the app is. It seems more that the current Desktop release of PlexAmp is a direct mirror of the mobile releases in layout and controls.
This is guaranteed to be a huge undertaking and may already be in the pipeline, but I’m currently not aware if that’s the case. Still a desktop client would be incredibly nice to have as the styling of PlexAmp is really pretty compared to the (full) Plex client on desktop, which isn’t as pretty… (Sorry!)
Another thing that would be great to have support for is Album Visualizer videos playing alongside tracks being played. The album being listened to in the above screenshot is a good example of this, which can be found here. KITCALIBER - HALCYONDAZE [album stream] - YouTube .
Maybe this could be done with timestamped cuts of a video, or just have looping videos for the tracks accompanying them.
Regarding app layout: the layout is responsive… have you tried various window sizes, horizontal vs. vertical orientation…? (though biggest impact is on the now-playing screen)
Regarding „album visualization“… do I understand correctly that you want to play a video of the track instead of displaying the album poster or the usual visualizers?
I’ve tried various window sizes and don’t think responsiveness is really the right wording here.
For App Layout it’s fine on Mobile devices (iOS & Android) and it seems it was designed for that first and foremost (especially “swiping” to different visualizers quickly.) Some of the specific issues would be the bottom portion of the player.
There isn’t a dedicated button to change to the previous track, but “swiping” right does go to the previous track.
Navigation Tabs are on the bottom of the window, which would be better fit on the left. Below is how the Plex app does navigation with tabs, which makes a lot more sense when on a desktop environment.
Primarily on the Now Playing screen, there isn’t a dedicated slider to quickly change the volume. The same applies for when on any other screen (like in the first screenshot), where there is no dedicated volume slider. On mobile devices this makes sense not to include, as changing the volume on the device itself is sufficient. For now all we have for in-app volume control is the Remote Control icon which opens this menu.
For “Album Visualization” I’m talking about having your own video track playing instead of the usual visualizers. Something similar to an animated album cover (which I haven’t tested if that works or not, as I’m still in the process of importing my library.)
That’s fully intentional, as they are developed using the same code base. It is the only way possible in terms of developer resources and to have a client that runs on a multitude of different platforms
That would be simply a “music video”. Plexamp is no video player. That ability was intentionally left out during its development.
